Headlight problem

I have a 626 that suffered a hit and run. I decided not to envolve the insurance company as the damage didn't appear to be too bad. I had to replace a headlight bulb but I'm having a problem. The new bulb will not light up but when it's plugged into it's connector, my high beam indecator light will turn on. Remove the bulb and the indecator light turns off. I have no idea what to do. I can't get the head light bulb to illuminate and I can't get my highbeam indecator off with the bulb connected. What do I do?
