I have a 99 XJ Sport 4x4 and noticed that sometimes as I am pulling away from a stop light the car shudders as if something is slipping. This condition occurs maybe once or twice a week then goes away for the rest of my driving.\

The noise is noticable from outside and I can feel something slipping or shuddering as I drive away. Doesn't occur at high speeds...only moving from a stop. It sounds like it is coming from the middle/rear of the car as opposed to the engine.

What could be causing this?

Do you have an automatic transmission? What is the mileage?

If you have an automatic, check the fluid level and top up if necessary. Low fluid level can produce such problems. If the level is fine, consider having a mechanic remove the transmission pan, inspect the pan for unusual debris, (some debris is okay, metal shavings/flakes may indicate an internal problem) and change the filter then refill with new fluid.

Do not get talked into using one of the trans flush machines. Make sure they drop the pan.

Also have the mechanic inspect the driveshaft U-joints, the transmission mount and make sure the rear axle U-bolts are tight. All these problems may result in driveline vibration under low-speed acceleration.
