Just got back in from the car....started perfectly 13 times, # 14 nothing...Forgot to mention earlier that it will start by closing the starter rely with a screwdriver.

This morning my 1989 Camry had this same issue. (no click,no sound) :banghead: I tried to turn the key a few times and it eventually started up. I'm wondering if It's the neutral saftey switch or the ignition switch. Could it be something else that is causing this problem? I know the ignition switch is really worn out. I can remove the key even when the car is running. anyone have any ideas what this problem could be. Thank You.

How about your starter motor?

I still haven't figured mine out, I'm going to the junkyard to get a complete ignition switch assembly and try that, Sounds like you should do the same, Especially if its the neutral safety switch because a new one is over $200.00

This is usually caused by worn contacts inside the starter's solenoid. You can varify this. The next time it fails to start go under the hood and locate the starter. Now take a wrench or a small hammer and give the solenoid a good tap. It's best to have someone inside the car holding the ignition switch in the start postion. If the starter now turns, you have varified the worn starter solenoid contacts problem. The usual solution is to replace the whole starter. You can sometimes remove and dissamble the starter's solenoid and replace just the contacts, if your dealer carries them. Some carry them and some don't. My preference is to take the whole starter to an automotive electrical rebuilder and have your oem starter completely rebuilt. Check your local phone book for an auto electrical rebuilder in your area. Here's a thread on replacing just the solenoid contacts:

If you don't know how to use a meter or a test light hold the key to start and wiggle the gear shift lever. If it turns over then the neutral start switch could be out of adjustment, corroded, or worn out. If the starter relay is clicking as you turn the key then the neutral start switch is ok.

Fixed it!!! It was the " imobilizer" lol. Toyota's factory installed generic alarm system, Removed it and its harness, been starting perfectly ever since.

No click, Mike. Worn contacts have that definite loud click. You can't miss it.

Unless you got a clock, JOET, it wont' be the contacts (yet).

Wiggling the gear shift have any effect? Hold the key to start and give it a try. If the starter relay doesn't even click then you're looking in the right direction.

xfeejayx,

I never did hear a click on my wife's 98 Camry when the starter solenoid contacts went bad. I guess it just depends on the particular relay used on the car. Some can be louder than others.
