I have a 1999 Grand AM GT 4 door. I was just thinking about putting in new speakers in the front doors now. I already changed out the rears just need better ones for the front, the bass is horrible. I would like bigger ones, but from what I see biggest I can get is 6 1/2. Would a 6x9 fit or is that too big? Please help. Thanks.

6 1/2 arent really the speaker size thats just the grill cover. the actual size is 4x6, if you want to fit 6 1/2s youd have to customize them to kit in there by cutting the window track and what not.

That's not realy true Jmoney.I have 6.5" rounds in both my GAs, the stock ones are those tiny 4x6's.
I might just throw together a little R&R for this. :D
Its prety easy to install, you just need a wood(or plastic) ring about 1" think and the diameter to the speaker. The ring will help clear the window mech as long as the speaker magnet isnt realy super big.
I have seen where someone removed the round piece on the door panel and just fastend the speaker to it somehow.
Ok, here is a pic of my GT door, you can see I used a cardboard ring as a templet...

Hope that helps.

hows the door panel clearance between the grill and the speaker on your car Xero? did u have to remove the factory grill or is it a simple fit and the panel fits fine over it? other than that looks good, time to get sum 6.5s now lol

On mine thier's still about an inch clearance from the face of the grill to the speaker.
My ring is only 3/4" think tho, 3/4" ply wood. ;)
I just couldnt justify paying twice as much for 4x6's, then two 6.5" round with higher wattage, I made it work! lol
Sounds great too!

I'll have to try that on mine... I finally put a deck in mine and I found out that whoever installed the speakers in the car used ones that were too small... the solution? Put one screw through the corner hole and let the rest of it hang :banghead:

I guess that works for some folks
Alsp you do need to drill pilot holes through the metal part of the door, makes it easier.
And make sure the wires are not to loose or they'll get caught by the window when you roll it all the way down, thats a pita when youre out cruising.

well anyways back to me. so do those round 6.5's sound better than 6x9 ovals? if so then i will put in some rounds. and my question again is will a 6x9 speaker even fit?

no I dont think a 6x9 will work. You would have to cut the metal of the door and make an oval ring to boot.
The rounds are fine for the door, just make sure they are tight and secured, not flopping on one screw.
