Disable TCC

Due to issues described in another thread I want to try and disable the TCC in my 1994 TS 3.8L

Upon opening the hood I can clearly see the connector going into the gearbox on the front and can reach it no problem.

However if I just unlug the connector then the car will not move at all in drive or overdrive leading me to conclude there are abviously other things running through that same connector that prevent the car moving if not connected.

Now I do remember reading that pins A and D on that connector control the TCC but I can find no markings.

If someone could please tell me the colors of the wires to disconnect in order to disable the TCC

ok after further digging I figured out it was the tan/black wire that needed disconnecting.

Tried it and it made no difference

Tried it and it made no difference
....difference about what ? ....ahhhh..I suppose about the "misses" ...???
..and normally, when the whole plug is disconnected, car should run in 3rd only and indeed no reverse as both solenoids A and B are needed for reverse.

after all is said and done I don't think it is missing on the engine side of it I think all the issues all alonge have been gear box related.

When accellerating in drive all seems fine.

When you take your foot off above 25 mph it feels like the brakes have been lightly applied when they have not.

while it is decelerating there is a feeling like you are pulsing the brake pedal realy fast even tho you are not touching it.

If you put your foot down to accellerate while the speed is still above 25 mph it feels like you are pulling a 1½ ton trailer behind you then once the revs get high enough it feels like it catches and accellerates normaly. soon as you take your foot off again you get the same feelings as described above.

If you continue to decelerate without touching the brake as soon as the car drops below about 20 mph the feeling of braking disapears and it goes back to normal. if you accelerate at this points it accellerates normaly until you get above 25 mph and take your foot off again at which point all the stuff described above starts all over again.

This happens hot or cold it makes no difference and it happens with the TCC wire connected or not.

Reverse works fine, as do 1 and 2 it only has the above symptoms in Drive and ODrive.

Unless there is something I am drastically missing I've basically now come to the conclusion that this is a problem within the gearbox so the car is now effectively off the road until such time as I can come up with the money to buy a replacement gear box and come up with a location with the required equipment to swap it out.

Long time ago, I would have described my transmission problem with the exact same words. Transmission clutch plates were warped and at times they were suppose to be released, they kept some contacts and this had a braking effect. IN fact, at the time I wanted to go backwards, it felt like it wanted to go forward at same time. That was a Chrysler transmission.
However, this could not be with this model when in OD because all clutches are applied at that time;

I'm trying to figure out what happens at 20-25 mph....probably the transition from 2nd to 3rd......it is like the sprag clutch has seized.....and as it should be in "overrun" condition, it drags instead.......
as I did not have this problem nor did I open that transmission, this is speculation....the same I would have if it were mine...

yeah like i say I have basically decided the gearbox is f****d.

Automatics are not very common here and pontiacs are like rocking horse poo so a shop if I could even find one that could service it would charge a fortune to fix it, probably more than the car is worth.

I have however found a source for an Auto Gearbox out of a 1996 3.8 (I assume it's the same box) for 450 Euro delivered including the torque convertor, I thought this was very resonable so I just have to save up the cash to buy it and then swap it out.

On that Trans you have to be careful..

You have a Model that uses a Temp sensor in the trans and the PCM monitors the Trans temps..

For the 1996 Model its pretty much set up the same as far as internal wiring goes, But some have the Temp sensor and some dont..

The biggest difference for you will be you going from the 3.06 Gear ratio you have currently to the 3.29 Gear ratio.... And then you need to know if you have a 31 or 30 reluctor wheel for the VSS..

It doe get a bit confusing... Trust me on that one
