XF is Flat, X is gloss, though x-18 is semi-gloss.

They come in two sizes, mini and regular. Mini holds 10 mL and regular holds 23 mL. By all means get all regular sized, they will last much longer and the price isn't that much more.

X designates a gloss color (unless the color description says otherwise i.e. X-18), XF a flat color. Be careful with X-21 flat base, it's not a color or primer it's a base to add to flat colors to make them flat.

If you have an airbrush or are thinking of picking up an airbrush make sure to pick up a 750mL jug of Tamiya thinner, it will last you a lifetime and save you hassle.

thanks alot daggerlee, one more question though about the flat base, so inorder to make the XF colors lat you NEED the flat base? or do u use that as a ype of clear to make any color flat?

No, you use it to make Gloss colors flat by mixing it with gloss colors in the proper ratios. DO NOT USE IT AS A CLEARCOAT OR PRIMER!! XF paints are already flat.

the XF colors are already flat, if you have a gloss color and you want it to be flat color, but can't get it in flat color, you can add flat base to create a flat color.

Does that make sense?

sure does make sense ray, is there anything out ther from tamiya that works as a dullcote like from testors, like u add it on top of a gloss color to make it flat without adding it to the whole bottle

I've taken Tamiya clear and added some flat base to make a flat clear. Works well, just don't apply it to thick or it gets a bit cloudy.

Who said anything about adding it to the whole bottle? Just mix what you need and that's all. Grr, there's a good proverb that would fit here..

And no, Tamiya doesn't make a dullcote, but mixing Flat Base with an acrylic clear coat gives good results.

Tamiya's Flat Base is actually a VERY fine powder (hence it's milky white color)suspended in a thick liquid. As stated above it is added to various paints to change the glossiness of the color (even semi-gloss has a bit of gloss in it). This is exactly how semi-gloss and flats are made (the factory will premix the powder for you). It's a very tricky thing to get the mizture correctand you can always add, but never subtract the flat base from the color...;-)>
