I am on the tail end of my Smooth White Tiger Project (96 Monte Z34, 3.4, 134,000). When I first bought my Monte it road like an angry School Bus with a wobble at low speeds, then another for high speeds, then a finished it off with a vibration from braking at any speed. A pow, bing, pop when you turn left and a pop, bing, pow when you turn right. And lets not discuss rail road tracks. I have replaced both wheel hubs/bearing, both ball joints (multiple times), one axel, both tire rod ends, Two different set of rims, 3 set of tires, four wheel studs all in the comfort of my garage with a standard tool set and manual and a little patients. (Thats why I love my chevy) Now I'm working on the top portions. I went and purchased some cheap Gabreial struts from autozone. They seem to dampen pretty well when I tested them before I installed them. Once installed, they were great for about 4 miles then my wobble and harsh ride returned. I took the struts out they had caved in on the sides and one on the bottom. So I took them back and got a replacement. I installed them, same story. So I ran across the street to Advanced with the intention of purchasing a couple of Monroe Sensa-Trac Strut "El Cheap-O's". First thing first these are sold in pairs! For the same price as 1 from AZ I got two. (I was sold right there). I installed them and they ride like a dream! My Monte rides like a fine tuned Caddy. Needless to say in fear of those struts from AZ damaging my ball joints I replaced both of those as well. The cheaper ball joints from Advance even came with a 1 year warranty, for just 1 penny more than the cheapy's from AZ that only have a 90 day. So if you are thinking about changing out your struts, remeber Advance/Parts America sells them 2 for around $33 the same price you would pay for one anywhere else and you heard it from me, the are great. Make sure you change the oil in the strut tower while you have the strut cartridge remove. I just use an old shirt and broom handle to stuff it down in there. Gave it a few minutes to soak up that old oil then pulled it out. I just used some normal 10W40 motor oil to pour back in. It only takes a little and if you over fill it it will spill out as you tighted the strut cartridge into the strut tower. if you value your garage or yard put some card board or something that will catch the oil. I put like a 1/8 of quart in each tower because I would rather have a little too much then a little to less. I have plenty of old shirt readily available to catch a lil oil. Hope this helps.
