head gasket/coolant leak?

I recently have bought a 98 Pontiac Grand Am SE, and there is a def coolant leak under the car. I had a mechanic who just graduated college look at it for free and he said its leaking out of a head gasket, but the head gasket isn't blown. I'm going this saturday to a place to have it looked at for a second opinion do you think its worth having the head gasket replaced since 8 months ago it had the transmission completely rebuilt by the previous owner for $1100, i dont have much money, so is there anything else i can do?

What engine is this ??
It probley would be worth fixing even if it didnt have the new transmission IMO.
Not much you can do other then replace the gaskets.
Should also look at the heater hoses, they sometimes leak and run down the back side of the block! It could also be a freeze plug leaking.

Its a 3.4L Twin Cam :]
the only reason i dont want to have it replaced is because a few friends and even one of my parents told me stories of how they had theirs fixed and everything got screwed up after that... so idk if i should have it fixed i dont have much $ for it ethier. i don't really have like $1000 to have it fixed :|

Thats not a 3.4 Twin Cam...
If its a 98 than you should have the 3100 Vin M V6..
If its leaking then chances are that the intake gasket is shot and leaking externally... If its leaking internally it may not last very long if it not taken care of soon.. Get it checked for certain so you know what the exact problem is..:)
If this a 2.4 Twin Cam then its another story

we took it to a place, they said its a leaking water pump.
and for some reason i have another problem sometimes i go from drive to reverse and it doesnt kick into reverse its almost like its in neutral, it just revs up. if i go from park to reverse it always kicks in fine, what could be the problem with that? and, another question... should i get this fixed if it needs a headlight rewired, a new water pump, and a new exhaust? is it worth fixing or should i just get rid of it?
