What is wrong with my car? 89 Camry problem

Hey all,

My "door light" is on and will not cut off. I've checked the truck light, pulled the door bulbs, pulled the door fuses, and nothing. Its killing my battery constantly. I have to keep a battery jumper on me at all times since this is my work car. About a month ago, the driver side rear door stopped opening. Today the passenger side rear door will not open. Anyone know what is going on and if I'm doomed?

To clarify, is the light you are talking about the one on the door itself under a red lens or the instrument panel "door open" warning light? And what exactly has stopped working...the windows? the locks?

My first crack at it sounds like the wiring harness that runs to the driver's door is suffering from fatigue. As the wires break, locks and windows stop working, though lights staying on is opposite of what I would expect. I have experienced this type of failure...finding a new one will be difficult and expensive. If you can find a low-mileage (relatively speaking) harness, you'll get more miles for your money.

Second, the door open switches may need to be cleaned or replaced. Usually little plunger-type switches that may be covered by a rubber boot.

Third, check the trunk's wiring harness for break since an open trunk will also illuminate the "door open" light on the dash. Both the driver's door and trunk harnesses see the most failures due to simple fatigue.
