1994 Lumina Z34 3.4 DOHC
The car ran good up until a few days ago.
it seem to backfire and ever since then the car doesnt seem to want to run very long. i pulled the codes and there was 32 codes the computer put out wich mostly had to do with the emissions. the more you accelerate when the car is running ,the mostly like it will choke out and kill. also doesnt want to idle.???? Whats the problem? i brought it to a mechanic and replaced the Crankshaft positioning sensors. ran alittle better, made it down the road then as soon as i started getting into the accelerator it choked out and killed. what am i doing wrong? anyone heard of this problem on the Z34's?

definately start with getting your cat checked out. then move onto your vacuum hoses. you probably fried most of the sensors when it backfired. change the iac and have the knock sensor checked as well. and as mentioned before in a diff thread. pull the ecm fuse and leave it out for 30 mins. replace and try again. let us know...

Cat Checks out fine, reset the codes, and checked for any vacum lines. as far as i understand the (IAC) wouldnt Cause it to kill the way it is killing. Still think this car is haunted by one Hell of a ghost. Any other ideas?

..by the way..where did they hide the coil packs...my son's Z-34 just started misfiring after going through a snow bank....still runs, but like 2 cylinders missing....

...I read the other thread you started on same subject, "silver.." ........I have a DTC 42 on son's Z-34 ...at least this one can flash the codes (92) ..and meaning it runs on default "bypass" setting for spark timing...which as I can see, is just what you need to be able to get back home, coughing and running like crap. Tested OK for spark on all six ...I am thinking of ordering a new ignition module, which is overdue at that age anyway.
...jeff....any idea of the best way to get there?..I'm thinking of pulling the radiator to have some room ...someone has a better idea? (other than dropping the subframe, please...) (for those not seeing the situation, the ignition module and coils are between center of radiator and engine block, right under the front exhaust manifold....:screwy:)

i had the same prob, vacum lines replaced = "problem" fixed for a while, but now it's coming back in slow increments.

i think that motor is really sensitive to vacum, and over time it get's worse. my car (96 Lumina, 3.4L) backfired a lot before the vacum lines were replaced, and would also not idle well and would stall at the worst times, like at a traffic light, but fortunately always restarted.

unless you've done the vacum lines, consider replacing them. good luck!

i replaced my vac lines with silicon hosing. 25 bucks at pepboys. that didnt cure the red light stalling tho. the seafoam transtune and replacing a couple sensors did.

:grinyes: Well After 11 or so days of working on this car i figured it out! Ignition module needed to be replaced. after replacing the crank sensor, Checking all of the fuel, vacum lines and all it was the ignition module. So if anyone gets 32 codes from the computer possibly cause by a short and your car does the same as mine did..... Ignition module. Well anyways thanks for the help from all of you! from what it sounds like, i might need yall soon, considering i own a 3.4 DOHC right? Thanks:grinyes:

I HAVE A 95 Z34 MONTE, 3.4 DOHC. THIS THING IS BECOMING A NIGHTMARE. KEEP GETTING AN EGR CODE, SO TOOK IT APART, AND 2 OF THE 3 BULLET SHAPED CONES WOULD NOT MOVE, 1 OF THEM WOULD AFTER SOME CARB CLEANER AND A LITTLE WORK, SO NEED A NEW EGR. O2 SENSORS, I FOUND ONE OF THEM BUT COULD NOT REACH IT, BEHIND MOTOR IN THE MIDDLE. IT WAS SPUTTERING, BUT WOULD STILL TAKE OFF, NOW IT DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE OFF, AND OVER REVS A BIT THEN SHIFTS HARD TO SECOND, SUCKING GAS LIKE CRAZY, TO THE POINT I THOUGHT IT HAD TO BE A LEAK. BUT NO LEAK. PROCESS OF ELEMINATION IS EXPENSIVE FOR THESE. IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS, OR KNOW ANYONE IN THIS FORUM WHO WOULD THAT WOULD BE GREAT.

Son's Z-34 just out of my garage....ONE spark plug/wire combo was creating havoc. So unless you have changed those in a decent past, new plugs and new wires are a must to begin with. That is normal maintenance anyway, and it can end up clearing a lot of problems...ah..had some slight oil intrusion in a few spark holes...
