How many alt amps? 94 Camry

I have been having starting problems w/ my '94 Camry (148k) The battery is only 1 year old and tests okay. I had the alternator tested at Advance Auto, and they told me the alternator is only putting out 28 amps, and it was toast. What should the amperage be, and would a rebuilt from Advance Auto be okay as a replacement? Also, would a 70 amp ($140) alternator be enough?
Any help would be appreciated :-)

Standard alternator is 70 amps and would be sufficient. A rebuilt alternator from Advance should be fine. I would recommend NAPA parts (if you have a choice)

Thanks Brian....
Once again, I would like to tell you how much I appreciate you and the guys on this forum. You have helped me get through some problems with my older Camry, and you help me keep her on the road. Since my '94 is mostly all original, things are starting to need replacing... so..... you'll probably be hearing a lot from me in the next few years as my car approaches the age in which she'll be old enough to drive herself (16 years old).
Now, with that said....... I'll be swapping out the alternators myself. Is there anything I should be aware of, or tricks to make the job easier?????
Thanks again,
Jackie

The alt is right on top. There is one bolt that holds the alt in position after adjustment by another LONG bolt. A third bolt serves as the pivot. First, disconnect the negative side battery terminal. Then, loosen the two larger bolts then turn the long bolt to release the tension in the belt...it does not need to be removed completely. Disconnect the terminals from the alt and remove the other two bolts. Reverse for installation. When tensioning the belt, you should be able to deflect the belt ~1/4" to 1/2" when pressing in the middle between the alt and crankshaft pulleys. Running with an overtightened belt will cause premature failure of the alt...very easy to do with that long bolt. Set the tension, then tighten the two big bolts. Good luck!

As jdmccright said, remove the negative battery cable first. Also, reinstall that same negative battery cable last. This is just for safety, just in case your wrench contacts any metal area while removing and reinstalling the cables.
