Urethane clear question

I really like the shine of a urethane clear, but it is not as forgiving as a laquer clear. This I have experienced and read several threads where this seems to be an issue for alot of people.

While i'm clearing a body, I ocassionally get dust specks or a hair or two fall into the clear while i'm spraying. I've tried taking a piece of tape to get it out, as someone suggested to me, but that doesn't seem to work well for me.

my questions are:

1: can I polish or sand out a dust or hair imperfection by stopping, letting the clear dry then using? polishing compound? wet/or dry sand paper? what grit?


2: will I have to buff out the whole body to make sure the spot with the imperfection is not obvious?

3: is it safe to spray urethane over a dried urethane without any problems of cracking? It seems that I might have had a problem with this at one time or another.

What is the best procedure for getting dust or hairs out of a urethane clear?

1. Technically you can, but it's tricky because if you sand and polish thoroughly, the next layer of paint won't have any teeth to grab on to, and because urethane's paint film is very firm, it can easily be peeled off. (yeah, I've done that before. It's no fun.) I'd keep the area of correction as small as possible by using something like a toothpick with a strip of sand paper wrapped around the tip.

2. You can mask the unaffected panels, and spray only on the panel that had an imperfection. Make sure to weaken the adhesive of the masking tape a bit by first applying to your hand or something.

3. I recently clear-coated in three sessions, but I followed the instruction provided in the Finisher's Auto Clear. It says that you can add another coat within 24hrs from the application of the first coat, or there is a risk of developing cracks.

Great advice! I really appreciate your help! I'm gonna try sanding out the small area with the imperfection in it!
