ok, i am thinking about buying a 2005 G6 GT. i have ALWAYS been a Grand Prix guy, and i am just wondering what type of problems people have w/ theses cars? i am not real familiar w/ the 3.5 litre, and havent heard much about them

i test drove the car today, as i said...it is a 2005 G6 GT. the car has 27K on it, and i am looking at a sticker of 15K for the car after tax and title. the car is fully loaded, and is a pretty nice car.

Not a bad deal. The 3500 is pretty much based off the 3400 found in the grand am's. Put's out decent power and gets pretty good gas mileage. I haven't heard of too many issues on this engine specific, other then 1 or 2 people that have had the standard GM LIM leak. Otherwise they are good. Other issues to look out for up front wheel clunking noises. There are several issues to this, and I'm unsure if it's model issue or not ( gt vs gtp) But there has been a few people that have had to had the steering rack replaced, tie rod ends.

I have an 06 g6 gtp and I'm content with the car, it runs great and hasn't give me problems.

My wife is at the end of her 3yr lease on a 2005 GT. Over the last three years the car has been trouble free aside from issues with steering. It has recently, just after the warranty has ended, started to move erratically when driving. Reading these threads it appears others have had the same problems with the steering rack and tie rods.

Another issue is the low profile tires. They offer little to no traction on wet, snow or icey roads. I would suggest having a second set of winter tires handy to switch to and save the low profiles for the summer months.

Other than those items my wife loves the car.

The 3500 is pretty much based off the 3400 found in the grand am's.

Oh god...i had an '04 Grand Am w/ the Ram Air 3400 and had NOTHING BUT problems w/ that car. i just traded it in last year on the '06 Impala SS. i hope its just BASED off the 3400, and not the same thing.

3echo9, as for your comment on the tires, i dont have to worry about that w/ this car. it has brand new Goodyear Triple treads on it. and i have heard about the problem w/ the rack and pinion and such. i was just wondering about any issues with the 3500 since it is a fairly new motor.

thanks for the reply's though guys. so far it sounds like a fairly reliable car

No problem.

Yeah the goodyear LS2's are garbage for tires, but since this one has triple treads, at least you don't have to deal with that. From a former 02 Grand Am Gt owner to a G6, the difference is like night and day with them. I was fed up with the problems my grand am had, and I'm pleased with my 6 so far! Again engine wise, they are similar motors, but from other fellow g6 owners I have yet to see any major issues with the 3500 engine. Just keep in mind that the 05's 3500 engine is slightly different then the 06 + 3500 engines, apparently they are VVT engines.

If you do purchase... Good Luck!
