Inner Fender Extension Modification

After recently having to get all my steel brake lines replaced and my knock sensors getting all corroded from road grime, rocks, salt, water and mud getting up into my engine compartment through the huge gap in the wheel well that is not covered, i decided to make a rubber flap extension to cover it up and keep all the crap out, like the old cars and trucks had. I know some of you guys have already done this but i got some pictures to show it.

I know it looks a little muddy in there and im going to clean it up a little but its been a little wet and muddy here in western PA, and those are aluminum pop rivets and stainless washers and i will also spray them with some paint or undercoating just so they dont stick out like a sore thumb.

I am very pleased with the outcome of this project and really feel that it will help tremendously with keeping junk out of my engine compartment. And GM should have implemented something like this in the first place, like they used to put on all the older cars and truck, just rediculous. Hope this helps some of you guys out and give it a try.

Materials used were two 33" by 13" peices of roofing rubber, and not the real thick stuff. About 16 bigger and longer pop rivets, no specific size, and 32 stainless fender washers, one on each side of the pop rivets to keep the plastic and rubber from ripping. Then i just trimmed the sections out for the a arms and rounded the corners so it almost looks like it should be in there.

that rubber roofing looks good and this will keep that water out..


BUT on my vehicle i have the rubber going further back behind the mud guard... the reason i did this was to keep the road debris from beating up my brake lines as well as the water on engine.....

I see, my stuff isnt bad back behind where your talking about, all my stuff was getting destroyed right behind the rubber that i put on.

Great job!! We don't have much of a rust problem here in the heat of North Texas, but it would a good thing to keep the mud and stuff off!!!

well up in the north country where salt and sand is a 4 months a year situation these driver side brake lines and the lines that pass over the transmission will eventually have to be replaced.... many have had to do this...all GM had to do was increase the depth about 2 more inches.....
