92 Metro timing

Today, I attempted to set the timing on my 92 Metro. I inserted the jumper wire into the plug by the firewall and set the timing to 5 degrees BTDC at idle speed. When I removed the jumper wire, the engine gained about 300 RPM and the timing jumped about 10 degrees. Is this where the computer thinks the timing needs to be or is something wrong?
Thanks

Yep you did the correct thing, Now you want to make sure that your idle is correct. After I adjust the idle to specs, I always go back and check the timing a second time. I personally like my idle about 50 higher then spec, but that's just me.

I also like to advance the timing just a little bit more than the 5 degree spec, Most over on teamswift are running 8-10 degrees. I like mine about 8. Once set, make sure your not pinging. By advancing a few degrees you get just a little bit more power and mileage out of it, they also seem to just run alittle bit better there too.
