95 Taurus SHO Transmission Problem

I have a 95 Taurus SHO that runs fine and shifts fine until you get into overdrive. The transmission will not downshift out of overdrive until you come to a stop and shut off the engine. Start it back up and it will do the same thing until you shut it off again. Has anyone had this problem, if so where can I start. Thanks to everyone. This is a really nice site.

Welcome to the forum!
If you press the "OD Off" button on the console shift handle, will O/D disengage without coming to a complete stop? If not, it sounds like you probably have a solenoid that's sticking, or a torque converter that's not disengaging. How's the condition of the transmission fluid, and is the level where it should be with the engine idling in park or neutral?
How do you know the car isn't shifting out of O/D? Does the engine stall when you come to a complete stop, chug when slowing, and/or just not want to take off from a stop unless you first shut off the engine and restart?
