Steps or online manual to replace blower motor

Hi folks,

I need to replace the blower motor in my 98 Grand Prix, and was wondering if anyone had any links to the steps needed or maybe an online manual that could help me get this done. I can repair computers and build networks, but car fixing is pretty foreign to me since I don't really know what anything is... :banghead:

Also, which one of these would I need?

It doesn't take anything special to do this job. I do however recommend that you remove the passenger seat to gain better access. To access the blower motor simply remove the trim covering under the passenger side of the dash. It comes out with a couple of screws. Then move way up under the dash and you should see the blower motor next to the firewall. Unplug the blower and then remove the three bolts that hold the fan motor in place. I think they are 6.5 mm but I don't remember exactly. The motor should come out. Clean the inside of the duct as junk will accumulate inside. If you are putting in a new fan and motor assembly just replace in reverse order. If not you will need to remove the fan from the old motor. Remove the nut and gently pry on either side and the fan should come off. Put the fan on the the new motor and reinstall. You may want to replace the resistor while you have the fan out since it is right next to the motor and is held in by two bolts. This will save you some grief if it goes bad.

You can do this with the seat in place but it can be a hassle. The seat is held in by two nuts on the floor and you will need to undo the seatbelt but it is worth the time to get better access. Good Luck!

Pass on the first since it is generic in nature and will require re-wiring. The second is OE direct plug-in and appears to be acceptable for an aftermarket product. Also, keep in mind there are two blower motor types available. It depends on whether you have a manual climate control system or the automatic climate control - ACC system. The blowers have different specs.

BNaylor... How do I know which climate control I have? I take it the fact that I have an "auto" button means I have the automatic system? And is there a way to tell if the one you recommended the one that works with the auto climate system?

It sounds like you have the ACC. Also, you will have the digital readout for the dual zone temperature setting and ambient temperature. The manual systems just have a rotary knob with positions 1-5 to control the blower and sliders for temperature. Also, look for GM RPO CJ2 on the SPID label located on the back of the trunk lid.

I do have the digital temperature readout, and no rotary knobs or sliders, so that answers that question.

Would you by chance know if the part I linked to above that you recommeded is the one I would need with the ACC?

I can't tell if the link is one for the ACC. There is no reference to it. For example for the AC Delco version at the GM dealer or AC Delco authorized parts source it specifically states for "ATC" which is automatic temperature control but the same if you call it ACC.

Okay cool. I called 2 dealers and they didn't have any separate parts listed for manual vs. ACC. I think I'll purchase it, and if it doesn't work, return it.

Hey fellas one last question...

Is the blower motor up behind the glove compartment or is more toward the middle of the car behind the vents and the radio?

It is toward the center of the car but not behind the radio. It is half way in between the two but it is not directly behind either the radio or the glove box.

Hey guys... Just wanted to thank you again for the advice. I replaced the blower motor this morning, and all is well...and I didn't even take out the seat.
