my 1995 grand cerokee laredo wont even turn over no power it started when i noticed when i started it the timming seemed off kindoff raa raa type then quick start now nothing i have power to radio ect but wont even click plz help :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Sorry im just frustrated 95 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl. i get all the lights ect when i turn the key but it wont start it wont even turn over no clicking no nothing kinda like if i totally disconnected the battery but the power is there gauge says battery is charged ect but wouldnt the starter at least make some kind of noise if it was bad of maybe its a fuse thing

Are you mechanically inclined?
Your problem is a gummed up NSS (Neutral Safety Switch)
To fix this yourself requires a trip beneath your transmission, to pull the bugger off.

It's not too bad a job.
The NSS is located on the Pass side of the automatic transmission. It is about the size of a deck of cards. It is held in place with a 12mm bolt, and a large nut is used to squeeze it onto a shaft that pokes out the side of the transmission.
I'd first hit that shaft with some CRC and then a wire brush, That should loosen it up pretty well.
You may have to fool with some zip ties too. It plugs into the harness on the firewall under the hood.
Once it's out, carefully open it up. (I always do this sort of thing in an aluminum brownie tin), and clean everything with some carb cleaner. Re-assemble it using some dilectric grease. Pay particular attention to the contacts spring loaded into the arm. Here's a link that explains this all much better.

your pretty sure thats what is is then ... no chance of it being the starter? or coil? you seem pretty certain and i really appreciate the help before it went out it was acting weird when id go and start it it would start slow and the pick up almost like the timing was off that kind of thing

You're right.
My guess is that our problem lay with the NSS primarily because you describe turning the key and "nothing at all" happening. The NSS will only allow the engine to crank when the shift lever is in Park or Neutral. I am guessing this is your problem, because this wound up being my problem when I experienced this "nothing at all happens when you throw the key" symptom. Try this.
Throw the key all the way to where the starter should be engaged, then grab the key (thru the steering wheel) with your left hand. Keep the ignition key thrown to where the engine should crank. Then use your right hand to depress the shifter button and move the shift lever out of park, down to neutral. Any cranking at all? If so, the problem lay with the NSS.
The starter can be checked by running a hot wire from the + Bat terminal to the small wire attached to the starter. Starters tend to fail with a zzzzzzzz noise, when the pinion fails to throw itself out.
A solenoid failure makes an obvious rapid fire clicking. Solenoids purpose is to protect the starter from an undercharged/failed battery.
My guess is still the NSS, because your symptom is "nothing at all happens when you throw the key".

hmm i didnt try that yet but i will i did however try putting it in reverse with the key on to see if the back up lights come on i heard somewhere that they were one and the same switch but maybe thats an all wheel drive or manual trans i dont know mine is just your basic auto trans 4x4 95 laredo ill give it a try i did check the relay and it was fine so the problem area is getting narrowed down ill try the starter jump method and the moving the shifter method when i get home from work tomorrow im hoping its the NSS ....that does make alot of sense cause i always thought the starter would give out some kind of clicking or zzzt sound like you said

ok i tried the starter went and took it to autozone to be tested passed your an a.. hole you where right BUT ... a hole my NSS is diff its a plug no one told me oil was going to spill out geez all works good thANK YOU :wink:

the NSS you refer too isnt the type in my jeep i have a plug type anyways you where right as rain thank you so much i think this is the website that has it otherwise look at autozone and look at 1995 GLC laredo with a 6cyl auto tran
