Range Rover Classic

Today I drove (1/2 mile) and had my car in park position for 5 minutes, with the key in the starter motor position. I realized there was a problem when I heard my car make a siren type sound and other strange noises and when I turned it off it smelled burning a bit. When I tried turning it on it wouldn't ignite until I jump started it. Thanks to the guy that jump started my car he told me that my key got stuck in the starter motor position. I have my Range rover 89' parked and I am afraid to start it again. I spent my life savings on a new engine 6 months ago and I am afraid to spend another bundle again. I am a girl that is learning about cars and would like some advise so I don't get the run around from a mechanic.

I moved your thread to a more appropriate sub forum where you should get a better response.

Have you got a little spray can of WD40 or similar oil?
If you have, then spray it into the key hole on the steering column, work the key in and out to make sure everything still slides.
That'll hopefully stop the same thing happening again.

It sounds like your starter still has it's teeth (sometimes they get chewed off like that) or it wouldn't have jump started.

Do you know where the fusebox is? It's on the passenger side of the heater controls. Take the cover off and pull the fuses one by one to see if there's a burnt out one. They'll be obvious if they are.
If you find a burnt one, check with the owners book for which circuit that is. My 85 doesn't have a fused starter circuit, but they aren't good at listing everything that the fuses protect.

Do you have access to basic electrical test equipment (multimeter etc)? I have all the workshop manuals somewhere, but you'll need a few tools to work through.
Nailing down exactly what the problem is will save you a lot of money.
