Air conditioning question

The air conditioning on my 1998 Venture blows very cold on the passenger side and mildly cold on the driver's side. The vent on the driver's side by the window barely blows cold air at all. The blowing force from all the vents is about the same. However, it gradually seems to dissipate as you move towards the drivers side with the vent by the drivers side window blowing with half the force of the others. Any ideas as to the problem.

Thank you

Pretty much the same problem on our van (1998). Rear A/C and passenger side A/C blows cold, driver's side does not. There is about a 15°F temperature difference between the rear and passenger side air and the driver's side air. The compressor kicks in and doesn't make any unusual noise and I didn't see any leaks around the condenser either.

I fix about a dozen of these complaints every A/C season- the refrigerant charge is low- due to a leak. As the refrigerant is routed through the evaporator- the passenger side air flow is on the inlet side of evap and is the first to "eat up" the cooling capacity- the driver's side is the last- so depending on how much refrigerant is in the system- the driver's side will be the first indicator of low charge-- let it go another 6 mths and you will be complaining that there is no cooling anywhere- so where is the leak? 90% of the time it is the compressor shaft seal on any vans built up to 2000 model yr- so how to fix? I generally pull the refrigerant charge and weigh it- it is always less than half of specification- I then replace the compressor shaft seal- and recharge to spec- and never see the vehicle again. A lot of folks will nurse this along by adding refrigerant every year- but this can be dangerous if you are not experienced in refrigeration.......

Thanks for your response. What type of price range would you say for this repair.

Thanks again

I do these "on the side" for about $200 -- most a/c shops probably will insist on changing the compressor- for upwards of $600+ it would be good to confirm it is low on refrigerant first.....the shop can do this...just remember-if it is low-- there has to be a leak- don't let them tell you that it is normal to be low....
