My car will not start due to a faulty Passlock II system. I have been looking on the internet and there are all these directions telling me how to disable it, but you have to have the car started to do it. I CAN'T START MY CAR. So what am I supposed to do? Also, people are saying stuff about a 10 minute wait time to start the car... can someone explain this to me and maybe I can get my car to start? Please and thank you!

Welcome to AF.

Try this...

Security relearn procedure:

1) Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.
2) Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is illuminated.
3) Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)
4) Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 11 minutes.
5) Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds.
6) Repeat #1 - #5 for 3 cycles.
7) On 4th attempt, car should start.

NOTE : Since this is a fairly long procedure, I would limit all electrical sources, such as disconnecting headlights, to prevent discharge of battery.

NOTE 2 : It is SAFE to wait LONGER than the allotted time, but it is not safe to wait less time. I.e. 12 minutes instead of 11 minutes should be safe; however, waiting 10 minutes instead of 11 minutes is not safe.

Properly executed, this procedure should take approximately 35 minutes to complete

I fixed the passlock problem on my 2000 Grand Am.
I removed the entire ignition switch from the vehicle.
Took it apart to get to the electrical contacts inside the plastic housing….it just snaps apart.
The electrical contacts were very dirty….so I cleaned them.
I also noted that each set of contacts has a leaf-type spring that pushes on the rear contact. One spring was firmly crimped in place.
The other was just sitting in place but looked like it had never been crimped…so I think it was not doing much good. I used a pair of pliers to crimp it tight.
I reassembled it…and have not had a problem since.
Previously, I had the passlock problem quit often…..particularly on damp days.
This also solved my SERVICE VEHICLE SOON light problem. I had not bee able to find any burned-out bulbs….but cleaning the ignition switch solved it.
I was also having problems with the dash lights not always coming on when the ignition key was turned…..in fact this was the problem that drove me to disassemble the ignition switch…..but it is now solved.
I had previously looked at the BCM and PCM…but they were good…no dampness or corrosion.
The engine also fires up much quicker.
