changing my ignition switch

i wanted to change my steering column on my 95 caprice (peeled column) so i bought another column from junk yard when i got it home i realized that it had switch that requires a key with a chip and mine now doesn't have a chip so i was wonder can i still swap out the ignition switches

The "chip" is actually a resistor set a specific resistance to work with only one key. You can bypass the "chip" by soldering a resistor inside the ignition on the contacts so then you'll be able to use a regular key.

if you had no resistor/chip key with your vehicle the new switch will work with your vehicle.... but you may see that the connector is different as your vehicle does not have this anti thieft device.....



my vehicle has the resistor key , if i bypass this resistor key , i can use any key to start,,,,, like a $1.50 key... and not pay $25.oo for chip/resistor key......which is why owners do this....

I'm fairly certain that all '94-up B-cars had a VATS system and key. If your's doesn't someone had been modifying.

if your column is the same as the junkyard one then there should be no problem swapping


if yours doesnt need vats and the new column is vats then no need to swap switches anyways
