my 01 troopers TOD flashes check when applied, but when in two wheel it is fine. also when it is put in four low it flashes check but the four wheels work, i know because i was stuck and they had spun, recently had an engine check as well, haven't found the code yet but all fluids are fine and it runs good. the TOD has been like this all winter but even with record snow i didn't need it. thanks for any help

Check the owners manual, it may tell you.

Sounds like the TOD computer isnt getting a reading from the front axle to tell its locked, even though it is.
Check the sensor mounted to the top of the TOD unit on the drivers side of the front axle. Mine behaved exactly like this, and it turned out the wires came away from the sensor. The pic if from the front of the truck and there is a small bash guard over the actuator. The pic does not show the two small leads that should be coming out the top.

Could be the sensor itself went bad too (unlikely). If you remove the sensor, there should be a spring loaded ball bearing on the end that should give when pushed and spring back into place. If it's loose or rattling about, it needs to be replaced.
