I just bought a 99 civic si and i'm new to all this stuff. I've been hearing about free mods like advance my timing. How do I do this, and is it bad for my car, and does it really do anything?

I'm planning on getting the basic bolt on stuff. Sorry for my stupidity on Hondas, its all new to me!

Thank you

being new i would have a local tuner shop do this for you. not the most ideal first project. it's may not be harmful to your vehicle and basically help you get up faster.

welcome to the world of imports. for your first lesson, do not listen to that crap about advancing your timing. it will do nothing except make your engine run bad. and as far as "free" mods go, the only real free mods are stripping the interior, removing ac and power steering(which may cost some money for block off plates and all that), and anything else a shop wont charge you for. there are no free mods in this cruel world but thats the way it is. yes stripping the interior will make it faster but at what cost? think about it

congrats on the car... welcome the import world... n the civic nation... oh man ure in for a ride (pardon the pun)... the good thing about civics is they're an aftermarket favorite... but the bad thing is that we're favored too much... so many parts it'll make u dizzy...

oh yeah advancing your timing is bad if u dunno wut ure doin... advancing ure timing brings u a lil closer to detonation...

my first suggestion for a mod before the bolt-ons is a helm's manual... best investment ive ever made...

Congrats on your purchase!
The best 'free' mod you can do is to install some good quality cold air ducting from a low point in your bumper or near a wheel arch to your air filter. After that look at the following for power increases:
-Cat back exhaust (no bigger than 2.25" piping, but whatever the hell muffler/tip you want. 2" is preferable"
-Header (aka. extractors)
-Performance air filter and some sort of induction
-Adjustable Cam Gears
-Aftermarket Cams

After this you have a number of options for more power, but they all cost muchos $$$.
