Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 - progress

OK, here's my next project. The Tamiya 1/24 scale Ferrari F40.
I've been going through a dry spell as far as motivation to build is concerned so hopefully this won't be another started project that doesn't get completed (damn Playstation 3 - Call of Duty 4 :banghead: )

For this project I intend to superdetail the base kit but I'm not planning any major modifications to the body to keep it clean. We all know how good the base kit is so I'll just add some details along the way robrex style :screwy:
Anyway, I started on the dash and wanted to replicate the finish on the real car so I removed all of the gauges and switches etc. to make it easy to paint without having to mask anything.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0037.jpg

Then added the details
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0048.jpg

The next thing I disliked about the Tamiya kit is the seats so I had to do some modifications. For some reason I deleted the pictures so if you want them just let me know and I'll post the before and after shots later:uhoh:
I also CF'd the interior tub and added the rest of the interior details
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0025.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0027.jpg

I have also started on the engine details which will be the biggest challenge of the kit (and also my favourite part:p )
First modification is the wastegate. Here's the kit part:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0014-1.jpg

I machined and painted a new one:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0015-1.jpg

and assembled the parts. Unfortunately I chipped some paint in the assembly process but I'll come back and fix that later

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0030.jpg

That's it for now. I'll have machined wheels and more engine progress very soon so if you like what you see, stay tuned!

Off to a great start, this will certainly be fun to watch.

The new wastegate and servo look terrific! Great idea also on drilling out and replacing the cockpit gauge bezels. I may have to try that when I get around to finishing my F40.

Sorry, I use Micro balloons. It's a model railroad product that they use for replicating snow in dioramas. Initially I mixed it with the paint and sprayed it on but recently I have used a different technique. Spray the part then sprinkle the micro balloons onto the wet paint (just like flocking). Then knock off the excess and re-spray the part in the desired colour. The photo's show the effect as quite grainy and rough but it real life it is very soft and fine.

Here's the finished effect mixed with the paint for comparison

Fantastic as always!

Not much in the way of step by step progress. But here's a picture of the engine at the moment. Lots still to do...

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0047a.jpg

I made replacement turbos to replace the awful kit pieces.. they still look ordinary in these photo's but you can see how small they are and once on the kit should look the business

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0043a.jpg

I've also started on the wheels by machining the centre out from the kit wheels and then made resin copies

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0031.jpg

The original wheels are 17" but I prefer the look of bigger wheels on scale models so I've stepped the machined rims to make them look slightly bigger without affecting the ride height or changing tyres. They aren't that much bigger but improves the look don't you think?

Here is a quick update.
I mentioned earlier that I am making new wheels so here is the progress.
First I made resin copies of the wheel centres
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0031.jpg

To make the machined rims I decided to do them in two pieces, the actual rim and the section which bolts to the centre. The reason for doing it this way is 1st, it made it easier to mill the bolt holes and 2nd, I can adjust the offset when I'm finishing the model to get a nice fit.
Here you can see the 3 pieces and then almost completed pictures (I still need to find bolt heads to use)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0057.jpg

More updates soon.

How about making your own bolt heads? :)

Before I started on the paint I needed to fix a few problems with the kit.
The first is the air inlet next to the side windows
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0038a.jpg

The kit simply has this section added to the window and asks you to paint it red. On the actual car this part is shaped to direct cool air into the engine. I forgot to take a picture of the glass in the kit but to fix the model I made a template of the shape and then used putty to form the intake
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0049.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0054.jpg

I then sanded the groove and after a bit of work it looks OK
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0063.jpg

Thanks for watching

i can only say for those who has machining assessibility / capability, you do have a absolute advantage over us (the plastic builders).

i hope for all those precision works you've made into this build, will shine out better than those who uses only plastic.

let's see what you can do on the completion.

good luck!

Sorry Sean...I have lost my modeling mojo! :crying: I can't even slap a box stock kit together without making a mess of it. The F40 is in the to-finish pile :runaround:
I'm also crap at Call of Duty 4 but that doesn't seem to stop me turning the PS3 on all the time :loser:

Did you do anything to the windshield? It looks like a really clean install, mine had that stupid edge at the top...

Thanks Alex. For the windshield I just ran a flat black paint marker along the side of the clear plastic. It seems to do the job of reducing the amount of reflection off the edge.

Great work. The paint looks spot on. A Ferrari in red is just the pure pony.

The rolling chassis is very promising. The seats are outstanding. Nothing to add. Basta.

You seem to manage to squeeze out a couple of WIP´s at the time. And I wonder...
