ok
It's official
my daughter is f-bomb'n awesome!
It probably won't look like much diffrent in general but it's all about method.
I usually do my lineart in Illustrator. My daughter uses Photoshop to do the lineart and rendering. She just showed me how to do the linework her way and it's great!
http://www.dhphut.com/images/clyde8.jpg
once again may not look like much but it is a much more organic method. She has a fancy tablet while I'm still on a mouse but even with the mouse I'm able to get a more natural look and feel to the line. It's computer but it's much closer to the pencil line.
here's a close up
http://www.dhphut.com/images/clyde7.jpg
now naturally not to be out done I had to show her how to make it a script and just hit a key to save a ton of time so I guess there was alittle give and take but mostly me taking a step back and marveling at her skill again.
I'm so proud of who she is.
she just finished a piece and put it on her site
http://www.spoonyart.com
I know a few other artist that use similar methods...they're gonna dig this one.
Shout out to Alix Harris...wow sweetheart....wow
oh she's 15

So how does she do it exactly to get the smoothness of line in P-shop?
lemorris
03-19-2008, 12:02 PM
the dreaded pen tool of course
:)
that's just for the linework.
the rendering is done using locked transparency on layers and some fine brush work.
I'll explain more as I understand it more.

I'm still learning as I go though so there's stuff I'll be tweaking but you know...it's a toon so I don't have to get lost in the sub-plot and ultimately I'll have a new method in my arsenal.

I'll post in a bit. I'd like to finish the lineart no later than tomorrow so I can throw in some color inbetween weekend jobs. :D

I dunno if there is some very complicated process involved in these but for a quick run down, just judging by the close ups, and in CS2 - with the pen tool selected choose paths rather than shapes (top left of the screen on the pen tool tool bar), draw your line, on the path palette right click on the path you've just drawn, choose stroke path. When the stroke path window appears choose brush and click "simulate pressure" ... the width of the line depends on the size of brush you have set, as well as the color if you choose "brush" ... you can also use pencil etc. There are many options.
The artwork here is amazing. Love the toon distortion.

yeah that's pretty much how it was done
it's not complicated at all, just different for me.
My daughter does her stuff this way. I normally do all my lineart il Illustrtor then render in ps channels (mostly for screenprint stuff)
http://www.lemorris.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10001/landc_15.jpg
It takes me so long to do because I only get a few minutes a night for stuff like this. I'm ok with the overall look so far though, and I'm learning stuff. The line definitely has more character than my other stuff so I'm cool.

Well since you use Illustrator, if you want even more freedom than PS gives you... Have you used "expand" before? It basically turns the stroke into a shape. They might have fixed this in newer versions but 9.0 puts in way too many points sometimes which can be a pain in the ass, but on lines with curves where you'll get many points, you can tweak them and make a custom line with varying weight. PS is limited in that you just kinda get a pen pressure effect at the ends of the line. Anyway, it's a pretty neat trick and I find that doing line art in AI is significantly easier and even faster (at least it's no slower) than PS.

I am Lemorris
I have been doing t-shirt designs for nearly 2 decades. I was all by hand till a couple years ago.
I am drawing the vws
my site is here: http://www.lemorris.com
this is a direct link to my gallery http://lemorris.com/lh/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=28
I do shirts and art for lots of folks like you do. I am very old.
My daughter is 15. She is an artist too. I have been rendering by doing all my lineart in Illy then rendering in PS channels. I do this because when you render in spot channels it is very much like cutting rubylith which is where I came from. My daughter does mainly anime/manga type art but her technique looked like something I saw someone doing recently. I asked my daughter to show me how she did her stuff.
I am doing the drawing of the VW under her direction.
I do not do art fulltime. I am a multi-media developer in the medical field. Sounds stupid...pays well.
For fun I roll around in my 58 euro ragtop bug and play VW with my friends http://www.dhpvw.com I also do several websites which helps pay for the stuff I have on and in my car.
I enjoy making videos for our club too http://www.dhphut.com/movies/movies.html warning on the ghost vid.

on the shirt sep thing
if I was going to sep this out for shirt films I'm probably going to have to use the channel mixer so I can go from layered rgb to spot color channels. I really don't like index separations or process seps for that matter so it would largely be a matter of personal preference. I have many screenprint art friends and a few are showing their methods for rgb to spot color shirt seps so that's nother cool part of this little project.

sorry for the side track
it confused me too
anyway
http://www.dhphut.com/images/clyde23.jpg
I went back to my pencil drawing and redrew the back window section. I coulda just put a reflection over the whole thing and said eff his pop outs but I redrew then rescanned. I moved my new scan of just the window into the right spot then did the line art on a new layer. I then selected everything around it and deleted it from the old lineart. then I selected just the pixel data on my new window and filled it on my old line layer. Then I went in and deleted all color form the old window and re-rendered the new color where I wanted it. After I get the glass in it it'll look pretty cool.
