Is this SSE just that or is it an SSEi?

Both of these will be easy to replace, and the aid of a Swivel will help..

The NA 3800 Series II uses a Direct Drive starter but a Gear reduced can be used in its place..

The SC'd 3800 uses a gear reduced...

Once the Air deflector is removed, replacing the starter is quite easy:)

Jrs3800... the starter on my 1996 3800 went bad... was quite a job getting it out due to the plastic guard which makes it very difficult to get onto the bolts. I have the new one and will hopefully get it back in tonight... any tricks on working around that gaurd? I have the bolt out.. but you don't seem to be able to put it on after the starter.. it seems they have to both be in place (because of the motor mount) to reinstall.. which puts it back in the way. I had to pry it out of the way to get them off.. not easy to do.. hoping there is a trick someone can tell me about. Thank you.

Follow up... finally had a dry evening and got the new starter put in. I had read somewhere that it was possible to put the guard back in if after you put the car on jack stands you jack up on the transmission pan (with a board between the pan and jack). I am not sure that did much.. but here is how I was able to get the guard back on. I did place the jack as I mentioned. On that motor mount by the starter there is a plunger type device. I put vice grips on its shaft to hold it and after putting some penetrating oil on the nut on the bottom I backed it off almost all the way. Then I put the jaws of a crescent wrench where the vice grips had been and pried it to a fuller extension. I was able to get the guard on as follows... picture how it is situated after being installed... like a backward L I laid the top of the "L" down flat toward the back of the starter. Then slid the bottom of the "L" over the motor mount so the bottom would be in place and stood the "L" upright and put the bottom into place. Then I pried the top of the "L" past the front end facing bolt of the starter and slipped it into place. Then I reinstalled the guard's little holding bolt.. #10M I think it was.. had to use an open end.. not enough clearance to get a socket or the other end on it.
Starter and guard successfully installed now.
That's great.. only problem.. that wasn't my problem. I found out after putting the new starter on it was due to the security system.. either my one key is too worn or there is a problem with the system... only 235K+ on the car.. have had grounding problems in the past.. so going to watch it close while I use my other key for a while. EDIT ADD - after a few weeks using the other key I have not had any more problems. If your car fails to start because starter will not engage.. and the security light stays lit, you have to wait three minutes, then try a different key.
I hope the information helps someone else.
