Main Bearings 96 lincoln towncar

Hello, How hard is it to change the main bearings. Can it be done from the bottom without pulling the engine. My car sat for 4 months with coolant in the engine when I started it there was a loud knock. With the coolant in the engine I think it rusted out causing a main bearing problem when the car was started after sitting for so long.

Gotta agee pretty much with Danielsatur, you will most likely be very disappointed if you try to replace bearings in this engine. If it has had coolant in the crankcase and has reached the point of knocking, there is probably crankshaft damage and a bearing job would not be a reasonable fix. You would probably just be throwing good money after bad. :2cents:Good luck with your project.:)

Thank both of you guys. By reasonable fix do you mean it will probably not get rid of the knock? Do not want to put a lot of time and money into the car.

It may be a good time to bail out. You will have at least some money:2cents:, and a lot of effort in replacing these bearings with a good chance that the crank is bad. You can't measure the crankshaft without removing it from the engine. I wouldn't gamble myself. I would hate to advise you to dig in from an economic standpoint. If you did proceed, I wouldn't do it without tearing down the engine further and taking some measurements. If you are looking a project then that would be a good choice. If you are trying to save money, probably not. :disappoin Good Luck

Please keep us informed ,the ball is in your court.

Did the engine knock "only briefly" after start up or did the knock persist? If the knock didn't quiet down after the oil pressure built up the "Mechanic in a Can" probably won't help much. The damage is done. At least as far as any reliable service from the engine is concerned.

danielsatur

I came up with procedure years ago for a Friends GEO STORM.
It ran great for two years than they sold it.
I change the oil in the block around three times within a week, because of the water.
However a TC hold's alot of oil and oil is over $110 a barrel.

I don't really think sck38 cares a lot about the car, because it sat for four months.

JUST LIKE A X :After so any problems you got to devorce them or you go Broke.

It's already Broke sck38,what do you have to lose? $100

What do you think the cars worth sitting there ?

I got a 1995 five years ago for nothing, and I'am still driving her.

I hear you there danielsatur, in my neck of the woods we buy oil by the quart for $2.50 + and no one I hang out with can afford a barrel! Only those that sell it for a profit, not those who intend to use it. Who would have thought that the petrolium products required to run our vehicles would have become such a critical issue.

I think it's cheaper to buy at the pump, you dont buy as many snaks!
Thats why I like woman with children, when you get up in the middle of the night they have better snaks.
I wounder how much BEER is a barrel these days?
DIdn't they call these Convenience stores Party stores at one time.
They need to go back to GAS STATION.
I went to a Truck stop one time ,I Though it was a WALMART.
I wonder if Larry the cable guy would like That?
I got one for JEFF,if your Pick-up has more than two tones you could be a Red NecK!
I think we should get a video of this and put it on YouTube,JACKASS,or some kind of reality show.
KCMIKE - I'am glad no-one can see me!
HEY - I thinks theres someone on the Tread Huffing Gas!
Is GAS cheaper than Crack!
MAYBE SCK38 will sell him a gas tank, if he's not going to use it.
We can help you push it to the HOOD,and you and tell the insurance it was a driver by

If there is a problem with the bearings just changing them won't do much good. The rear main bearing is the one that usually spins due to lack of oil. The crank is junk when this happens as well as the connecting rod. The block and main bearing caps will need to be line bored, crank replaced and the rod that has the spun bearing. A lot of machineing work on an car that you don't want to spend to much on.

I don't know what exactly the problem is, it might not be bad bearings. Get a second opinion on the noise. Have a buddy listen to it, not one of those know it all jack asses but some one that knows thier stuff. Like the guys said above it would worth replacing the leaky manifold gasket and changing the oil a few times. See what happens.

The junk yard engine is a good option, if the engine turns out to be no good. I have lots of good 4.6 engines starting from 400 up to 700 $.

sck38
03-16-2008, 10:52 AM
The reason the block had coolant in it was because the plastic intake manifold on the 4.6 cracked. After replacing the intake, upon initial start up the engine started knocking. The reason I ask about the bearings is because a mobile mechanic said it was the main bearing and he would change them for $75 dollars. Sounds a little cheap to me.

danielsatur

Talk to Junk yard doggie about INTAKE's,he probably has room for your car.
Some of those Intakes can be very costly.

Don't forget to replace that little metal tube going through the Intake to the HEATER Core, water pump, new water hoses,thremo-stat and coolant.

l would hate to have water problems 6-months from now.

I would have your Tech put it in writing + Warranty.
Alot of Techincans have to Troubleshoot at the customers expense.

* See Thread 1995 or NEWER!

In another year Jnk yard doggie might want it for nothing.

ADVICE - If you Cannot fix the repairs yourself - Divorce her and sell her parts on craigslist.
She will spend your money.

PS - Your luckey it's not an LS. LINCOLN SERVICE

Yes we always have room for more cars, 10 acres and no restrictions on the property. I havent seen any of those cracked manifolds yet. I've heard lots of stories. I did buy a Town Car a while back where some one had started to take the engine apart on. I tried to start it, and the coolant sprayed everywhere and filled the crank case. Turns out they had removed the intake manifold and bolted it back on with no gasket. I replaced the gasket and changed the oil three times to clean up the inside of the motor. That cleared up the oil and that engine ran great. Why the intake gasket was removed and not re installed is any ones guess.

That's not the best one I have, Although the engine does turn over and the oil looks good. I replaced the dip stick, since the top was melted off and didn't want any water to get in. I'll get that engine running this summer and check it out. The cat's name is Spunkey III he is checking out the damage. The lead dog was driving at the time, I guess she thought it would be easier to run the cat over. See the picture.
