When my 2001 kia sportage is idling the rpm seems to increase by double the revs, any ideas why and how i can fix it.

Is Check Engine LIght ON? IF yes read codes and report. If any other symptoms, like hard starting or wandering idle, report also.
I understand it idles faster and faster as you let it by itself...
In the immediate, check for all vacuum lines to be connected and tight. I'd suggest also cleaning the idle air valve...easy to take it off (2 screws) http://www.geocities.com/lmp4203/kiasport/IAC.jpg and clean with gas or carb solvent. Several have reported idle and starting improvement after this. THis component is not reported as subject to failure though, but cleaning is no harm.

..it takes a scanner. I think having one..less than $100...is not an expense, it is an investment. However, in the USA, Autozone is reported to read the codes for free.
