2 easy(?) questions

Alright, I'm looking to get out of the POS car that i bought after i wrecked my Balt, and I have finally found one that might strike my fancy.
The first question is probably the easiest: how much will it cost me to get a fuel-pump for the SR20 engine swap? I ask because one of my options is a beautiful Sil80 sitting along the curb needing a fuelpump. I'm hoping that *maybe* i can limp the car home or borrow a truck and trailer.
The last question is: in light of the no-fuel-pump situation, how reliable is a 240SX? I understand that as a sportscar, it really depends on how they're driven, but I just need basics. Are they particularly high maintainence, or are they pretty forgiving.
Finally, when do they 'die' on you? 200kmi? 400kmi?
Well, I guess that was really 3 questions, but i know you're all nice guys (and gals maybe?)

the fuel pumps can be had for about 90 bucks for a walbro 255lph.
240's with sr's are pretty darn reliable, so no worries there...
as far as "die on you" it depends on your driving, they can last upwards to around 150k mi i would say. then stuff would probably need to be dealt with.

additional answer to question 2:
your buying a car someone already fixed up. its life is therefore mostly in the previous owners hands. that said, properly maintained, an SR will go for a long time. the turbo will probably shit out long before the motor. and if the car isnt rusty, there really arent too many other problems that 240s are known for. they use a pretty basic tried and true setup. much like how the cobalts are tried and true copies of cavaliers, but the big difference in the two scenarios, is that 240s dont suck. and none of the other parts bin cars that lent designs to the 240s sucked.

thanks for the help guys, it's nice to know that for once i'm looking at a car that won't explode two days after i buy it!
The 240sx's are hot, there's only two around here, and i've never even seen a Sil80 except in the movies and stuff. I really hope to get my hands on this car, especially now that i know it's worth the buy.
And by the way... this goes to you Slideways:
I had a cobalt, and my girl's got a cavalier. Those cars aren't crap, just underpowered. They can/will haul tail with a little work- i WILL live to see it done! :grinyes:
and i love your sig. it reminds me of my local walmart (where all the 'racers' meet up)

i hate to steal your thunder, but tuning a cavalier is like tuning a yugo, yes they can become fast, but it doesnt make it a nice car, nor does it make it relieable, which i will never consider a cavi or cobalt either of those two things.
btw...if you'd like to argue with me about it...im a mechanic, i see cobalts and cavi's almost on a daily basis...dang pos's...

me too. they arent the worst cars as far as reliability goes but theres just no real technology, no refinement, and very little performance value beyond an iron block that can take some boost. or in the cobalt's case, a mass produced motor that can be built to handle boost. but any motor that can't be built to handle lots of boost is way bottom of the barrel. even swapping forged internals and a headgasket on a daewoo motor will make it able to handle some serious boost.
oh and unless this sil80 is right hand drive, came from japan, and had an SR20 from the factory, its not a sil80, just a 240sx hatchback with a front end swap. but please dont rice it out, and dont be an idiot and try to drift it before you learn how to drive it. and i know for a fact, from you saying how good cavaliers are, that you dont know how to drive it.

Cavaliers are best for people who just want a car for a to b driving. Not really good for racing. I used to have a cavalier that I think one of its previous owners had tried racing and f'ed it up, because it had a lot of problems when I bought it. Wound up putting a 2 1/2 hole in the block one night because of those problems (rod snapped). I wouldnt try to build up a cavalier, and probably not a cobalt, nor even my escort for that matter (even though they did make a rally version of it).

I understand we all have our opinions on cars, but this is not a thread about why or why not his Cobalt/Cavalier sucks. SO, if we could please keep on topic, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll just close this.

ok, the simple answer to this ? is: I'll tell you how reliable a 240 is, it really does have a lot to do with previous owners, but that aside, think about how reliable your cobalt was, k? now you could probably double that if it hasn't been seriously abused simply because its Japanese. I'm not dogging American automakers, I happen to be a Ford man myself. But it isnt a big secret that the Japs build just about the best quality in a car.

:banghead: Okay, I understand ALL of the points you are making about Cavaliers and Cobalts. I was really joking when i said that they can go fast (hence, the "I will live to see it done" disclaimer). Now, I don't intend to 'rice' the car, I hate cars like that, i prefer a cleaner look. And- the ORIGINAL "Sileighty" WAS a 240SX with a front-end swap. Eventually, Nissan decided that it could make more money in the Japanese market by selling the cars with the swaps premade, and marketed them as Sil80s. They only made a handful however, as a limited run.
Now, I don't understand how basic knowlege of what does/does not constitute a good car can tell you anything about how I drive, but I don't plan on smashing this car over anything than perhaps someone's FAT HEAD, and i DO know how to drift a car.
Thank you- that is all :grinyes:

The "Factory" Sil-80s were never sold by Nissan, only a dealership by the name of "Kids Heart"

ok ok but still, were talking a car thats 10 years newer than an s13 with technology 10 years older. and a crappily suspended FWD econobox is not a real comparison.
but i digress. if maintained properly, theres not really a ceiling for how long it will run. but things like crusty bushings, rust, tie rods/ball joints, and other things come into play with use. just like any car. at least you got the sil80 part correct. i was making sure you at least knew a little about the car you are getting. but dont listen to miles prower. hes just mad that the whole world cant fit in the stands at his track to witness his dorifto leetness.

ya know, just thought I would throw this in, I'm pretty sure a Cobalt with the Ecotech hold a land speed record.

for its heavily regulated class, yeah. and 2 other vehicles that own land speed records? a geo metro and a diesel VW rabbit pickup.

yeah, I really, REALLY dont like chevy, but since they learned to copy the jap engineering they actually have made some changes for the better, the point I'm trying to make is, although they really can have potential, you very seldom see a chevy of any kind with extremely high milage, unless owned by some old fogie and never driven over 55mph. I have seen many hondas, toys, mazdas, and nissans, your japanese makers, with well over 200k, in fact I had a honda with nearly 500k and still purred like a kitten, the tolerances in the engines are so exact that,if properly maintained they will just about run forever, some of them actually say not to run synthetic oil untill after 60k because the engine wont even break in with it.
