I now have a ram jet 350 engine which was running extremely hot..I upgraded to a be cool radiator and now Im shopping for a fan....my concern is the rated 50 amp draw...I have a v8 alternator...does anyone have any experience with this fan...recommend buying it or not?

You need to look at the amperage output capacity of you alternator. And for that high of rating, you should want to upgrade the wiring to hold up that much flow, maybe even add a fuse.

Sure you have the ign. timing right? Too far advanced and things will heat up in a hurry.

I did remember checking the timing when we first turned it on. We did get the timing correct since we had to install the diagnostic check tool to temporarily disable the computer. But at that time I was running the small v6 radiator with the single fan. (This is my first hot rod project) But the recommendation for a high output alternator makes alot of sense especially since I have a sound system. I think i took out the alternator from a 88 or 89 caprice. I need to check the amperage...I know that the alternator was handling the juice alot better than that lame v6 alternator, since i had the system blasting and it hardly put a dent in the charging...maybe I can use the same one I got or upgrade if it doesnt...thanks

I read somewhere that someone used one fan on all the time linked with the ignition system and then linked one fan with a temp switch and that worked for him. What do you think about that set up?

There should be a single wire (tan) hookup with a quick disconnect up by the firewall, right hand side. Disconnect that to set the timing appropriately.

I'm not overly sure what the standard Caprice alternator rating was, but normally GM's of the era ran around 85 amps. A civil package may run a 120-125A (which sounds like a fair rating for what you need).

For the fan, I would go the easy route and buy a kit that incorperates a temp sending unit in the radiator versus hardwiring it to a hot ign. source, which would prematurely shorten the fan's life. :2cents:

Im going to purchase the fan this evening and then install it with a temp switch....I'll keep you posted on the outcome!!!

the fan will fit but only if you put it in backwards and cut off a piece of the metal shroud to allow clearance for the steering box. At first the down side was that the flaps that should be facing down are now up..That can be rectified by drilling the holes on the opposite side and reinstalling the flaps, they come off easy.
