crank angle sensor

what is the purpose of a crank angle sensor in a distributorless vehicle. what happens when it goes bad and can it be replaced?

It tells the computer where the crankshaft is so spark is delivered at the correct time. Some vehicles use the camshaft position sensor to deliver spark (usually OHC). If the crank sensor fails (and it is what the computer uses for spark timing), the engine will not run. Every part can be replaced, it's just a question of how hard it is to replace.

The crank angle sensor is a basic component of the E.C.C.S. It monitors engine speed and piston position, and sends signals to the E.C.U. to control fuel injection, ignition timing and other functions.

The crank angle sensor has a rotor plate and a wave-forming circuit. The rotor plate has 360 slits for 10 signal and 6 slits for 1200signal. Light Emitting Diodes (L.E.D.) and photo diodes are built in the wave-forming circuit.

When the rotor plate passes between the L.E.D. and the photo diode, the slits in the rotor plate continually cut the light being transmitted to the photo diode from the L.E.D. This generates rough-shaped pulses which are converted into on-off pulses by the wave-forming circuit, which are sent to the E.C.U.

If you want to be safe then just replace your crank angle sensor so at least it wont be hassles. Also be sure that all your [Auto Body Spam link removed by modertors] are always fully maintained.

What book did you copy that out of? VERY few systems use LEDs due to the fact that any dust/dirt/grease buildup will affect system performance. Almost all are magnetic, but do work basically that way.

I would not replace a sensor as maintenance, especially on some vehicles where timing belt removal is required.
