Tamiya Chrome and Flat alumnium

Has anyone notice or it could be just me that the tamiya chrome is pretty shitty and does not come out looking like chrome at all. Rather the flat alumnium looks more chrome then the chrome paint itself. I know alcad chrome looks like chrome has any modellers notice the same thing or is is the fume causing my eyes to go blurry :D

I think what he's getting at is brush on chrome. I don't notice much difference between chrome X-11 and flat aluminum XF-16. I have them both though....

Testor Silver is really silver.. it have a nice difference between Testor Silver ans XF-16.. I use both on models

Could somebody with a bottle of Alclad at home give it a try on a test piece (or at least voice their opinion on this?)

Question again... Can Alclad II be applied with a brush for fine detail chrome work?


Thing about X-11 is it has a lot of metallic flake in it, making it not really chrome, but more metallic silver. I want a chrome for engine and interior detailing.

Alclad is extremely difficult to brush on as it dries extremely fast, it is only recommended for airbrushing on.
You could try brushing it on, but I don't think you will be happy with the results I am afraid.

alcad 2 can be painted on but only on tiny surface. I saw your thread about wanting to paint the wheel that is consider a larger surface and the alcad 2 will not look good painted on. Go to walmart and pic up a airbrush set for a cheap price. I saw it at the toy section in canada for like 50 bucks include paints, and propellant. is not the best air brush but it will do the trick.

oh i think is a cheap testor airbrush kit had testor paint included.

Testors Model Masters Chrome Silver is an excellent brush-on chrome. It won't look real, but it is very chrom-ish and metal particles aren't visible at all.

I've used a Tamiya X-11 Paint Pen before, and it's a really good, smooth chrome. Because of the felt-pen nib, it doesn't bring through flecks, so seems to be really smooth (not sure, but it's a really different paint, almost like the Spray paint).

If you want to use a Chrome, the best is to spray out of a spray can into a cup or bottle (there was a thread on this a week or so ago), and use that with a brush. I must admit, the so-called 'chrome silver' is very 'muddy' in it's appearance really.

Just my thoughts. The pen is a definite option, but hard to find them...

The Tamiya Paint MArkers use their enamel paints...

I've applied alclad 2 chrome with a needle to very small bolts found on wheels. Result was great, you can really tell the difference between the aluminium rim and chrome bolts. The trick is to apply the alclad really thick. I scooped concentrated flecks that settled around the rim of the bottle.
