clutch problem

I need to replace the clutch in my 93 escort gt. I am wondering about how long it would take to do it, and do you need to pull the motor or can you pull the tranny without pulling the motor? Amy help is appreciated.

It will take about 4-6 hours depending on how fast you work. The tranny can be dropped and you don't have to pull the engine. Since most of the mounts for the engine are on the tranny you will have to support it from the top with some kind of cross brace or a winch if you have one. Once you take the half shafts out of the tranny you might want to hold the side gears in place with a short length of broom handle to keep them from dropping into the tranny. Everything else is pretty straight forward.

Not sure what the side gears are, havent dealt much with transmissons, please explain a little more bout them if you could. So, use a cherry piker to support the engine, remove halfshafts, remove any wires , support tranny then remove engine mounts, then remove bolts btwn motor and tranny and it should drop straight down? Now its just finding the time btwn work and getting my 240sx diagnosed, and getting a garage to do the work in.

The side gears mentioned are where the half shafts plug into the tranny.
Make sure you know everything that needs to be done before you start the job... you will need an alignment tool for the new clutch if it didn't come with your new one. You will also need to remove the flywheel and have it resurfaced.
Invest in a repair manual at the car shop... the instructions and pictures will be helpful for all the details.

I already have a place lined up to resurface the flywheel, and have the clutch ordered. I will be having a friend helping me do the clutch and he knows more about it, he has done more with RWD trannys though.

The guy I brought it to said he had to drop the cradle to do the clutch. But it wasn't the clutch, just in dire need of a tune up. Clutch slips a bit but not bad, should last till the 240sx is running. The people that looked at it before I brought it to redlined said it was the clutch causing the motor to run like crap, is that possible?
