Need advise on 2000 Sportage

I have a 2000 Sportage that until yesterday had no problems. However after putting on the new tag now it misses and coughs and won't hardly run. It has over 107,000 miles on it and nothing has been done expect oil changes and fuel filter changed. I've read numerous threads and timing belt seems to be the culprit from what I have read. The check engine lights flash and I am not near a code reader. Could this be my problem? If not what could it be? It ran fine until I shut it off and restarted it no problems before that..

IN any case, at 107,000 miles, changing the T belt is mandatory preventive maintenance, if not corrective.
ignition problems are also common, and those very short spark plug wires often decide they do not pass the current any more..like mine did...and it perfectly matched the description you gave.. misses and coughs and won't hardly run...

OF course, reading the codes would tell..and I suggest you should buy a code reader: mine was under $100 and it is so helpful to have an instant explanation .
Oil invasion to rear spark plug is also common...a valve cover gasket is around 26$.
