Rear Wiper - Half a Wipe?

Hello All, My 99 GCL runs and looks great but my rear wiper only swipes about half way accross the window. Sometimes it goes all the way and sometimes it only goes some of the way.

Kind of reminds me of an old girlfriend.... but anyway, back to the wiper, when it does decide to stop mid-way, it always goes back to the starting position. Then the next swipe is anyone's guess how far it will go.

Does anyone have any ideas? I wanted to check here before I blew $100 bucks on a motor.

It is proabably the motor - I had this problem with my 94 ZJ where it would wipe and go about half way and stop and then it would go back to rest and it got to the point where it quit working all together. Alot of people replaces the motor at this point - but I tore mine apart and what happens is the is a metal bushing in the motor and seizes up on the shaft and this causes the motor to overheat from working so hard and stops like said. You could puller the bushing out and clean it up with some sand paper along with the shaft and put some greese on it it it should work like new. I just left the bushing out - never had a problem with it again - had the jeep for 2 1/2 years after that.

Thanks DK - I read about the bushing in another post as well but wanted to see if applied to the half wipe thing. I'll pull it appart this weekend.

Thanks for advice...

I replaced the rear wiper motor on my '98 a few years back when I had a similar problem. The problem with my rear wiper now is that the whole wiper blade doesn't make contact with the window, only about 5" of the center touches the window :dunno:

It is probably the wiper arm seizing up - the spring probably isn't strong enough to hold it to the rear glass. try spraying it with some penetrating oil (PB Blast, WD40, etc....) and working the arm back and forth.
