Squeaky noise + smell

2004 Taurus - 100K

Searching the threads I see this might be a Camshaft Position Sensor / Cylinder Identification (CID) Sensor problem, but would like some input just the same.

About 2 weeks ago I started noticing a smell when I would get out of the car - it smelled like melting plastic and I could not identify where the smell was coming from. Two days ago I started out in the morning (40 degrees) and heard a squeaking noise then the engine misfired several times, but didn't die. I kept running it and the squeak continued but it ran fine. I've put a stethoscope to the engine and it's the loudest on the bell housing of the transmission.

Sound familiar to anyone?
Any help would be appreciated.

If you have the Vulcan it very well could be the CPS.

Do not buy an aftermarket unit.
There have been several problems with the Dorman unit.
You should probably be getting a code if it has failed.

Definately check it before it chews itself up and you have major problems.

Buy one from ford.

Just got back from my victory lap. :smokin:

Indeed it was the synchronizer - old one was difficult to rotate by hand - the sensor actually looked pretty good but I replaced it anyway. Never did get any codes.

Thanks for the tip about the aftermarket Chinese synchros - the Ford parts were $175 including tax - but I'm sure that cheaper then fixing the damage a failed unit would have caused.

In and out in about an hour - easier than I had expected.

Thanks to all who post this valuable information - it really is a lifesaver.

Thanks again for being here and sharing your expertise.
