cruise control

I've had my '98 voyager for about a year now. After a lot of work (and continued problems with the gauge cluster that has sub sided), I've got the kinks worked out. There's only one problem-my cruise control isn't working. It used to work really well. I tried it about two weeks ago and the light would come on but it wouldn't work. I can't find a fuse for the cruise under the hood or under the dash. Please help!!!

If the cruise control light is coming on fuse should be good, in my 93 owners manual the speed control fuse is # 14 (2 amp fuse)

It is a bad clockspring in the steering wheel and there was a recall on your model back in 1999 or 2000. I believe Chrysler will still honor the recall so shouldn't cost you anything to get fixed. The clockspring is in the electrical circuit between the cruise switches in the steering wheel and the other modules. So in the trouble chart that tempfixit refers to, this is an open in the cruise circuit.

If the clock spring were bad i would expect a airbag or abs light to illuminate. Check the stop light switch under the dash and adjacent to the brake pedal to see if the foot that extends and contracts is moving properly, I have had two cars with no cruise and both were repaired with a new stop light switch.

The clockspring is a ribbon wire that is coiled up inside the steering column. This component is the subject of many discussions on these threads. Once you remove the airbag module and the steering wheel, it is usually the very next component stacked in the column. It delivers current to all of the systems mentioned above, airbag, cruise control and horn. When it fails (and they do a lot) the wire breaks leaving one or all of the circuits open and inoperative. This will cause the airbag light to come on and shut down the airbag system. As long as that light is on, the airbags will NOT deploy, even in an accident. Sometimes it’s intermittent as the wire begins to break. Once it breaks completely, the ‘airbag’ light will illuminate.
This was a factory recall for many vehicles and many customers are unaware of that.
