so i have a friend who said he'd sell me a 15" kicker cvr for 100$. cvr's being nice subs, and this sub retails for ~250$, i was thinking about doing it. but i had some questions. i know that 15" subs arent that great for rock and metal, because they're so "slow". i listen to some rock and metal, but also alot of rap too. if i did get this sub, i'd probably get a sealed box to help the sub be more accurate. so what do you think? should i take up this deal? im just alittle hesitant because im not sure if it will sound good when i listen to rock/metal.

15's are not slow. I listen to a ton of metal and with 2-15's, in a ported enclosure its accurate as hell. Granted they are more suited for moving air. I think the idea of bigger subs and a slower response is mainly due to that fact that some people only listen to what others tell them, and that some people that buy larger subs put them in way oversized, or way undersized enclosures, and that they use them for more bass and they are usually distorted and played with horrible sounding rap songs. The cones on my 15's are lighter than cones on most 12" subs.
With proper tuning and the proper enclosure it can make for a great sub.
To give you an idea of what i listen to just a few bands with some fast bass Dragon Force, Fear Factory (love the double bass), Nevermore, and i listen to alot of death metal. I think my favorite song to play for people who dont think my 15"s are capable of quick bass is cradle of filth mannequins, it plays without missing a beat.

wow, well i guess i was wrong then. i've always believed that 15s were slower/less accurate. oh well.
so would you suggest getting a ported box rather than a sealed one? why?
you mentioned people putting them in oversized boxes or undersized boxes, how big should the box be?

ported = more output around tuning frequency.
box size depends mostly on driver(s)
CVR's arent 250 retail there around 90 bux all day on ebay.

the "speed" of the sub has to do with it's construction more than it's size. Most of what happens with an overweight sub cone is that it's hard to control, it doesn't start or stop immediately - making it sound sloppy.

a single 15, given that you listen to rap and metal... i would suggest 3 cubes @ 32hz
