Fine Tuning.

Here's the thing. I own a 86 2.3L single barrel carb. Recently the timing skipped and I went about fixing it. (and learning lots of new things about it.)
So i got the timing fixed. Made sure to remove the disty cap to make sure it was pointing at the no. 1 cylinder. Right now i believe I have it timed right a 0 degrees. Piston 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Cam is set so both valves are shut (by means of using the alignment mark)
So my question is: What should the timing be set at? And how do you go about setting the timing/fine tuning?
Thanks for all the help in advance.

The catalyst under your hood or in the driver's side door jamb should tell you what the timing is supposed to be set to. You will need a timing light to set the timing.
