i have a 2000 grand prix GT. 146000k miles. something is wrong with my front end...when im driving over rough terrain such as my driveway and there is uneven surfaces theres a knocking noise in the front right side. you can feel it beneath you and you can hear it. it doesnt ever do it when you are driving on the highway unless theres a rough spot in the road such as a pot hole. it sounds like something is loose and knocking. i dont know if this has anything to do with the problem but when you jack the right side up you can take the wheel on both sides and wiggle it side to side. it has a little bit of play. my dad said it could be a bad tie rod but he says he can see some play in the rack and pinion. could anyone help me with what it could possibly be? i had a problem with the wheel bearings and had to replace them. also if it helps that side tire wears a little more than the left side and it kind of pulls to the right while drivinga litttle.

When you do the 9 and 3 o'clock test on the wheel there should be very little if any play. With your mileage and if you have the original tie rods they are probably worn out. Also there is an inner tie rod at the rack and pinion so that may account for the additional play seen. If the outer tie rod is bad you should see the slop when doing the wheel test and may hear the noise like clunking. There is a GM TSB out where the outer tie rod nut at the steering knuckle was not torqued properly and caused premature failure. I'd start with replacing the outer tie rods on both sides and then check the freeplay again. Be sure to get an alignment after replacing the tie rods.
