I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Recently i have noticed that the car runs only in 2nd gear. It won't shift into any other gear. and when i put it in reverse it jerk hard. I checked my transmission fluid and filled that up but no help there. i read somewhere else about a speed sensor going bad and that can cause the problem. but i dunno if that is right or not. if anyone has any advice, if would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a check engine light? I would think that you would get one if the speed sensor went bad. It could be the tranny control unit also.

I would try changing the oil and filter on the tranny before replacing any parts.

Did the speedo just stop working? That would tell him whether his is working or not.

How would it get to 2nd gear if it didn't move enough to upshift from 1st if it was an AT?

How was your tranny running then? Soudns like a transmission cable was disconnected IMO.

The VSS only effect auto trannies. He has a manual so all the VSS does is operate the odometer and speedo. I have no idea what you mean by tanny cable. Sounds like your referring to the older cars that used cables to drive the speedo.

I thought ours were cable driven? Shows how much I know.
