03 chevy express 2500 stalled

Hi, I have a 2003 Chevy Express 2500, 5L.

There was one day I went to a store and was in a rush.. so I sort of pushed the van a bit. Needless to say i didn't redline it like you would in a race track.. I was just pushing it more than usual. On the way there and back, i dind't notice anything that was abnormal. I got home. Went back into the van and started it up again. It seemed ok.. I'm not sure if there was a slight vibration before or not.. but idling has a slight vibration.. dunno if that has any clues or not. but ye.

I started the van and put it into drive. It didn't stall but when i give it a little gas. it starts vibrating.. as if it's mis firing.. it made me feel like i shouldn't be giving it gas.

Ok now, I pulled over on my street to stop. I turned off the engine so I can think about whats going on without damaging it any further possibly. Ok I recently changed the oil so I went to check the oil and it was fine. Don't ask me why I went to check the oil..:nono:..

I then went back into the vehicle .. started the car. and notice the vibration.. maybe i'm peranoid but ye.. Ok.. I put the van into Drive. and i do this all slowly.. THEN i notice that everything seems to by dying.. the charging system. the oil pressure. it all seems to be dying and there is EVEN MORE of a vibration. like crazy vibration.. then it stalled.

So ye I went back into neutral and started the van and let it idle.. seemed fine.. nothing wrong. maybe that little slight vibration again.. but it seems like normal vibration.. than i went into reverse so i can go back home with towing.. but it stalled again.. I noticed whenever i go into drive or reverse it stalls. SO THEN.. I just started that van and quickly reversed home before it stalled.. basically i dind't let it stall..

I'm not sure and since it seems to be a painful job to check the sparkplugs and such. i wanted to confirm it. I have suspicious of the ignition system or crank position sensor.

PS. This is my father's vehicle and I have no clue of the services he had before.

Thanks. Wil

First thing I would do is pull the engine cover and check for a broken plug wire. I had the same symptoms when some critter chewed on one of the wires on my '04. If nothing is visible, you need to get the codes read out of the computer and see what, if anything, that shows.

Welcome to AF.
How many miles on it?
Any check engine lights?
A good engine capable scanner will point you to the problem.
Also on that one always check the fuel pressure for up to par and watch and check the fuel pressure when it is acting up.
I would start with a good tune up with Ac-delco tune up parts.
If your Fathers van I would check with him and or get his ok for repair if you have not already.
Good Luck

Actually I had an engine light.. it was the P1345 CKP/CMP correlation problem.. whihc i suspect is the crank position sensor. Thats why i suspect it was that but i drove it a while back daily in really wet and snowy conditions and it ran fine.. NOTHING wrong at all.. but i could never really clear it. and sometimes it turns off on its own. so i never gave it much thought.. but right now it's at 160,000 km .. and since i am not clear on the services before form one of the scamming garages .. i'm not sure if they changed the spark plugs and wires.. because before i went into the trade i know the van got messed up before and went through 1 - 2k repair.. went like two times..

SO.. ye.. does anyone know if the crank position sensor is a easy job or not?? and if you can please summarize the procedure that would be great!!! XD

BTW.. i'm in the trade.. i'm just off work now because of schooling.. still have almsot 2 months left so.. hard to work on the van.. hard to find time.

Thanks in advance! Wil.

The code 1345 is for camshaft retard setting not set right.
Not sensors. Not sensors not timing. The timing is not adjustable.

You will need a engine capable scanner to set it.
It involves adjusting the dist to -2 to +2 or as close to 0 degrees as you can get it. In degrees camshaft retard.

I would go for a good tune up and fuel pressure check.

So you're telling me all i have to do is retard the cams 2 degrees electronically?? .. but the thing is i never did anythign to the engine or anything close to that.. except oil changes.

And Would a Solus Scanner from Snap-On be able to do this??

I went on a drive today around the block.. it started fine. nothing abnormal. but ye i suspect this only happens when the engine is warmed up.. so ye it went up to around 78-80 degrees and started to act up.. This only occurs when I am in Reverse or Drive.. Park and Neutral is perfectly fine going into the gear and idling there.

Acting up meaning when stopping I feel some hesitation and when gassing i feel hesitations as well.. Hope this helps..

I was wondering if i don't have a scanner that can retard/advance the camshaft timing can i just replace the sensor?? and is it easy?

Yes on the snap on scanners.
No on replace the sensors.

A code does not say replace the sensor it says check it out.

A dead/bad camshaft sensor can will you a real high camshaft retard reading.
Check the camshaft retard reading and if it reak high and cannot be adjusted then and only then check the sensor.

Read myfirsy post again.

From what you have told us you may need a tune up.

On the code P1345 you need a good engine capable scanner to check and read and adjust the camshaft retard.

Good uck

Okay sorry its been a while. but if got the van tuned up and all. i saved myself the trouble and changed the spark plugs, wires, distributor(cam sensor). PCV and such.. okay after i got it all installed it seemed to be fine. All good. but occasionally. it stalls. it only stalled on me once..

Okay here is what happend for me, after installing everything we started the car and it was very good.. didn't seem to have any vibration or signs of misfiring. When i went into the van and put it into reverse it stalled. and the engine code came back on the P1345. that day i dind't have time so i just drove it home. After i got out of the garage.. forcing it when i got into gear. it ran perfectly fine.. no signs of misfiring or anything. all the way home. nothing wrong..

I hear that I am suppose to do something wit hthe computer and the car.. and run it at a certain rpm wiht the computer attached to it and help it relearn soemthing with the cam sensor.. any ideas??

Oh yea.. even now it stalls occasionally and teh Engine light sometimes goes off. whihc i think it means that it worked very well for 3 times in a row. so i'm not sure..

Any help is very mcuh appreciated. Thanks

Check codes again.
Post back codes no.
On code 1345.

what i'm not sure about is whether it's only one problem not two.. because it is weird... after replacing everything(tune up- spark plug, wire, cam sensor(distributor), pcv, and some other stuff.) it got a little better..

But recently.. I drove it.. and there was a slight sign of misfiring but.. not something that would be noticed very much.. very slight.

And how would i go about checking the fuel system.. I think some of the fuel parts need servicing like the egr and stuff

Do you still have codes?
To check fuel pressure get a fuel pressure test gauge from a parts store that loans rents or sells them.

ye.. same one p1345 crank to cam.. it's not a memory code.. it's hard/active

As in post no 8 you need to.
Set the dist camshaft retard setting with a engine capable scanner.
And check that fuel pressure.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Hey.. MT2500 would you know a some what direction of how to change the camshaft retard on a snap-on solus scanner?

Have you got in to the camshaft retard reading/setting?
Some times it is under cylinder missfire section.
If so what is the reading you have?
You need to turn the dist to bring the reading in as close to 0 DEGREES or as close to - or + 1 degrees as you can get it.
Turn the dist a little and then speed the engine over 1K rps for the reading to reset.
If the reading raises up turn the dist the other way.
It will not reset on the scanner reading at idle.
Speed up engine to recheck reading

doo you mean 1k RPM.. RPS is pretty fast.. sorry just to make sure i don't have to like red line it.. haha.. and btw no tach on that vehicle.. but could probably see it on the scanner..

I don't have mcuh chances to bring the van into the shop because it's constantly being used.. right now after the tune up.. it sometimes stalls when it starts but right after that one stall you start it .. it's fine it runs..

I tested it once .. when it's cold it runs very very smooth.. but when it warms up it starts to go rougher .. but not rough to the point you will be like..PULLING over.. it's just shaking a bit at idle.
