Replace the flasher unit, it should be on the fuse block.
As you live in Illinois, you have a real winter. So my guess is your car and the flasher unit are cold when you first start driving, but after 50 miles the heater has made the flasher nice and toasty warm. Mechanical flasher units use the heating and cooling of a circuit to make the flash and click sound you here. If the unit is going bad, it's possible it fails when it is fully warm.
You may be able to test the theory by removing the flasher unit the next time it fails, leave it outside in the cold for 10 minutes, then reinstall and see if the lights work properly again.
