Tamiya Countach LP400

Older Tamiya reissue of the LP400 kit, wearing the new wheels/tires from the latest reissue. Very simple kit, crude around the edges, shows well for a shelf model. I built the newest issue for Scale Auto review, look for that "Blue Ely" one in the magazine in the next few months. This one is painted Testors Go Mango w/Testors clear. Most time was spent removing mold lines and masking all the various black trim pieces. The new kit is $41 retail in the US. That is insane :shakehead The new wheels/tires are an improvement, but the wheels are a scale inch too small in diameter. I tried the new tires over the old/larger wheels, they were a bit too big. Amazingly enough the smaller wheels w/new tires look just fine. I don't understand how this can be a 2400 yen kit, when Fujimi has one w/ more detail including opening doors, even curbside, for 1800 yen. Crazy :uhoh:

Wow, very nice work.
Seems to me it's not evident to mask off all the black parts.
And yes, fujimi might have a cheaper offering, but let's face it, when tamiya's on the box, it sells automatically.
Eitherway, glad to see it built in such a nice way and thanks for the review !
Btw, is it true that orange is the new black?

I agree, great. A Countach is ever a Countach and it's ever a pleasure to eyes. I like the color+wheels combo.

Thanks for the comments; I have more pics of the Countach I reviewed for Scale Auto.
This one was painted in Lamborghini Blue Ely, and this one has the newly tooled wheels/tires.

Yeah, I bought like 10 of these kits when K-B Toys was going out of business, then I opened one, and thought F~(<, I wasted my money! I only spent like $20 on all of them, but turns out, egay helped out, I sold them all for no less than $15/kit! LOL, Who's the sucker now, Tamiya!!!

Both are very good looking models! Excellent color choice!
I agree with you, the Tamiya kits are way to expensive compared to other manufacturers who offer the same or better quality.

I have to agree with Bob. I'm pretty sure I can find a Fujimi Enthusiast series Countach for $41.

Very nice and clean builds, you did an excellent job on masking all the black parts! I agree with sportracer02 that compared to current supercars' wheels they do look waaay too small. But then, even supercars weigh in at a hefty rate nowadays. What was the weight of the first gen Countach? About 1400kg's. A current Murcielago wheighs in at 1600+ kg's... Back then the lower curb weight and "slower" cars allowed smaller brakes, hence the smaller rims. Or maybe the drivers had more skills (read: respect) when driving the cars.
Anyway, great build and a real pleasure to look at :)

Since my review Tamiya bumped prices across the board 15%; the LP400 is now a staggering $48 :shakehead

Power junkie! ;)
How about you write some damning reviews of some of the kits I want so that their prices take a nose dive? :D
