93 S-10 Jimmy just died

I was driving home when I made a left turn. As soon as I finished the turn, the Jimmy died. Just like when I run out of gas. Except the tank was half full. I tried to start it, but it won't even come close. Before I'm even finished turning the key will it just stop.
Before this happened, I was on the freeway and I could hear a suspicious noise coming from the engine. I don't have a clue what it was but it must have something to do with my car dieing and not starting.
I hope I gave enough info to begin troubleshooting this.
Well, I'm off to tell my mother so she can throw a fit, yelling and cussing at me. Later.

Well, I went back to my car and it started right up. But
There was a lot of smoke coming from the engine and it smelled like burned rubber, but it could drive. After about 20 feet though something blew, I suppose it was a belt (possibly the serpentine belt). Then I lost my Power Steering, but I took it in stride and drove it to a shop just a block away.

Check all of the belt pulleys. They should all turn smoothly and quietly. The crankshaft will not turn by hand, but it shouldn't wobble.

The shop I took it too did say the serpentine belt did tear and snap. Yet, it was shreeded so violently that it damaged the altenator which had to be replaced.
The worst part about this is that my mother had bought a new serpentine belt for the Jimmy about a year ago but it was never used.

I think they may have it backwards. The alternator pulley probably shredded the belt.
