Duplicating a needed part?

Hey all,

I lost the rear wing off my Sauber-MB C9 and need a replacement. Outside of asking anyone for a replacement, is there a way of duplicating it? I've heard of resin casting parts, but have no idea of how one goes about it. FYI, the kit this is from is the Hasegawa curbside kit. I also have the Tamiya kit, so I could use the wing from that kit for a template.

I'd appreciate any ideas for those that have been through this problem!

Thanks!

Daniel

Resin casting is easy, there's a pretty straight forward how to in the depository at the top of the forum which you should find useful.

You could also shape the wing out of styrene sheet if you felt adventurous enough.

Depending on the part, I'd probably rather scratchbuild another one than cast a single wing. Resin casting isn't hard, but it does take some practice and understanding of what you're doing. The materials also aren't cheap- it would be a fair bit cheaper just to buy a new kit just for the wing than it would be to buy the RTV and resin to cast a new wing. Resin tends to be practical if you're making 3 or more copies of a part, but for one it's alot of expense and hassle (assuming there are other ways available) for making just one part. On the other hand, if it's a complicated part (lots of complicated curves or details), casting a new one might be easier than scratchbuilding one.

Let's see some pics of the kit part you do have before advising one way or another.

Since the C9's wing is straight and the section is uniform, it's more practical, easier and cheaper to fabricate it with styrene.

Or you could simply ask Revell to send you a replacement part. They did reissue the Hasegawa kit a few months ago.
Cheapest and easiest way! ;)

Have a go at just making the wing endplates from sheet styrene using the Tamiya wing as a template. You will find the delicately thin scatchbuilt endplates to be much more satisfyingly accurate. Once those are done then build the rest of the wing with he confidence gained from doing the endplates. Cement everything together with liquid model cement instead of superglue as the bonds will be more flexible and less prone to cracking. If you find that this is too frustrating at least you'll know that getting a replacement wing is the best option for you.
