04 silverado brakes

when changing the brakes on an 04 silverado, I need a torx bit I think to remove the caliper, but no size fits the head of the bolt. I've used every size possible. Is there a vehicle specific tool used for that brake? If so, where? and if not, what could I do?

It's not a Torx screw, what you need is a Hex key, or more commonly referred to as an Allen Wrench. The main difference between the two is that the Hex key is hexagonal, as opposed to the Torx which is hexalobular. Basically, the Torx is a Star shaped bit, and the Allen has 6 flat edges. I'm not sure of the size of the Allen Wrench, but I believe the size to be 1/2" or 3/4". If you have Allen wrenches at your need, try all the sizes till one fits. It's not that hard.

Late for the original post, but possibly this will be of use to someone else. I too found myself with a similar puzzle in trying to remove the brake caliper on my 2003 Silverado. In fact it IS a star drive, the size you are after is T55. Oddly, most "Brake Specific" drives only go to T50, but you will find this bit in the regular tool section. Hope it helps, good luck!

I got my T55 at sears in the automotive section not the craftsman tool area.

the bit need be with a flat face so that it sets into the head deep .....

also it is a very strong metal , the other bits break.

snap-on sells a nice t-55 power bit, works great with the impact. they say torx are not designed in impact, although some are advertised as such, but they break easy. the snap-on one is great.

I never used a gun on these drivers. as you know tooooo easy to break , then your screwed .

for the cost I have had this sears auto section driver bit still working fine.

I also have a set of heavy duty 90 deg drivers that fit and using some pipe as a torque amplifier to remove these sometimes PITA bolt/pins.

thats why i bought it in a power driver. up here in canada those bolts get seized in do to all the salt on the roads in the winter. so they some times need that shock from the impact.
