i need to hire a new office administrator for the agency i work for. after 3 weeks of interview after interview and studying resumes and applications, i've narrowed it down to 3 candidates. here's a brief desciription of them.

Kerri: 29 year old with bachelor's degree from valporaiso university. has 1.5 years experience as an administrative assistant, 3 years as a staffing specialist. those are some good things. the only thing that's keeping her from landing the job immediately is the fact that she can't start for another month and a half and i want to fill this position by the end of the week.

patti: 34 year old, bachelor's degree from kent state; 8 years as a secretary; 2 years as a HR assistant. she would be good but i was a little turned off during her second interview. she didn't seem very enthusiastic for the position, she didn't answer my questions as thoroughly as i would have liked. her first interview went extremely well however.

ray: 23 yrs old, just graduated for depaul university; doesn't have extensive office experience. but, his educational credentials are outstanding. he did very well in the interviews, very well-spoken and seemingly organized.

this position isn't brain surgery by a long long shot. it's something that a smart high school kid can do. but i'm not allowed to hire anyone with less than an associate's degree. who would you hire of these three?

My first pick would be Kerri, if you can survive that long with the position empty.

I'd go with Patti and if that doesnt work than Ray

Patti sounds like she has work experiance and education..everyone has their bad days and job interviews dont help that. but she sounds well qualified.

Ray sounds like he really wants the job and has education ..but no work experiance..but everyone has to start somewhere right?

Consider this; just because someone's not extremely excited at the interview doesn't nessasary mean they don't care if they get the job or not. Especially if they've been through a gazillion interviews & haven't been hired at anyone of them. It's hard to keep your spirits up. I know because I've been looking for a job for 2 months now. It gets pretty annoying. But take this in mind, likely when that person gets the job they'll cherish the position. Kinda like recently I just got a job in the icu at the local hospital. I couldn't be happier.:D

i see what you're saying. nonetheless, why would you give a job to someone who doesnt' appear to want it? maybe she did have a bad day, maybe she'd be a great worker. but you can't foresee that from the behavior she was displaying at her second interview. this position requires you to interact with the staff and clients 8 hours a day, 40+ hours a week.

trust me, i've had plenty of experience with this, hiring and recruiting etc etc. when you're in an interview, enthusiasm scores big points. no matter if you're an extremely passive guy, quiet and restrained, you go to an interview with the intent to land that job and do what it takes. the guy that stands out from the rest gets the job. the guy who sits back and lets the interviewer do most of the talking, doesn't see that office again.
