Help guys! I think I've got big transmission problems.

I'm worried to drive the truck around anymore but I think it's lost 2nd gear. It's winding high out of 1st and into 3rd and then from 3rd to 1st on the way back down. With the truck at idle you can hear a whining/humming noise and it whines down as you shut the engine off. You can also smell hotness or burning.

What exactly happened here? Should I repair, replace upgrade? Only 2 problems, no money and only transportation. http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_banghead.gif

I have a vette style servo but never got around to installing it.

Update. The truck will move if putting it manually into any gear except reverse. It won't go into reverse. The fluid doesn't smelled burnt to be but I only drove about 2 miles home after it initially wouldn't change. Never exceeding 30 mph.

Search the forum for "sun shell" or "sunshell". Common problem with 4l60e. Indicated by your loss of 2nd and reverse.

That appears to be it. A rebuild is pretty much in order I guess. This is something I can't do myself. Might I be better off with a new transmission?

Normally, loosing 2nd, 4th and R means the sunshell is broken (unfortunately a common failure on the 4L60E). The tranny needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
